This person really tried to scam us out of our car and $$ (beware if you get something like this)
DH and I are selling his Mustang on e-bay and craigslist. We want to buy a Navigator ![]()
. So excited to get it! Anyway, we received an e-mail from craigslist from someone that wanted to buy the car. That was great! He said he was sending a certified bank check for the car. Good so far. A few weeks past and we kinda forgot about it. Other people were coming to look at it so we figured once we receive the check, we'd stop showing the car.
Well, we received a certified bank check on Tuesday. Wierd, the check was for 10K and the cars price is $5,200. DH took the check to the issuing bank and it was closed. Then, he had a suspicion that it was fake. He took it to a check cashing store and they told him that it was a phony check!
**BEWARE**
We called the issuing bank in California. They told us it's a scam and here's how it works:
-You get the check in the mail
-You cash the check against your account
-Someone comes to pick up the car and the rest of the funds (check being $4,800 over selling price)
-The check bounces and you are out 10K AND your car!
The bank told us they get about 2-3 phone calls a day about check like this one. Either them bouncing and people wanting their money back or people asking for validation.
I've read online that people have actually went through with this! The check looks 100% real and it's from a real company. DH and I called the company and they said people could do that agaisnt ANY public business. They have gotten phone calls about that in the past.
Just a warning to be careful. People are getting really desperate and apparently will do anything for money![]()
