Those who went to Hawaii - money question

Hi! I am going to Hawaii for 12 days (5 days Oahu, 7 Kauai). I was wondering how much money I should bring with me... not including flights or hotels. We will need to buys meals every day plus we want to do fun stuff like the helicopter tour. I have no clue how much to bring!

Re: Those who went to Hawaii - money question

I think we spent about $3000 for 10 days and we prety much splurged. We had 3 meals a day, activities (helicopter, snorkeling, etc.), car rental, etc. We went to a lot of expensive restaurants for dinner too. We kept lunch and breakfast - more low key. We didn't drink heavily...both of us are drinkers but in hawaii there isn't much nightlife so we only really had drinks one night at the hotel bar and a drink or a bottle of wine with dinner most nights.

Re: Those who went to Hawaii - money question

We spent about 3,000 for 10 days... we mostly used credit cards for dinners and sightseeing stuff... plus I booked some things online before we left. We just used cash for small things and just incases.

FYI- get the entertainment book for Hawaii... not that we used it alot, but we did save money on a few meals and they have a ton of Cold Stone Creamerys there and there were coupons for those!

Re: Those who went to Hawaii - money question

At least on Oahu and Maui, there are cash machines everywhere and most places take credit cards..so I would only bring a few hundred cash and then take out when you need. We spent 6 days on Maui and brought a few hundred dollars with us which lasted us most of the trip since we put everything on a credit card. Traveling with cash is risky.

Re: Those who went to Hawaii - money question

I agree with Stef - we put most everything on our cc. It is the US so you will find most places do take cc's and you will find bank machines and you feel safe using both. I can't remember how much cash we actually brought. But I wouldn't imagine more than $500 between the 2 of us.

Re: Those who went to Hawaii - money question

We did the same. Most things on the credit card. We probably spent about 600-800 cash and the rest CC. I think we spent a little under $3000. We had breakfast included which saved us a lot. We would eat a free meal at 11:30 and have just a snack through the day so the only meal we really paid for was dinner (and they are expensive). The activites were all a pretty penny though

Re: Those who went to Hawaii - money question

We were silly and used mostly cash (we knew if we put it on the cc, we might not use the cash we had to pay the bill). I think we spent close to 4,000 but we came home with a ton of souviners!!

Re: Those who went to Hawaii - money question

$8K?!

DH paid for most of our things but we certainly didn't come close to $8K in spending money!

Like Stef said, there are ATMs everywhere so we never had that much cash on us anyway.

The restaurants are expensive they say, but it's comparable to NYC/LI places so it's not a huge shock to us.

No clue on the tours and such - we charged that all to either our room or our CC.

Re: Those who went to Hawaii - money question

Plan on spending 3-5 K. We booked several activities through our hotel concierge and they just added the charges to our bill. There are ATM's everywhere including in most of the hotels and the nice restaurants all take charge cards. We also found it easier to sign our pools side drink charges to our room rather than carrying cash down to the pool or beach with us.

Bring enough cash to have a few drinks on the plane, in HW you'll be able to charge almost everything. I did spend about $80 on crafts at a luau and that was about it in cash...

Have fun on your trip!!

Re: Those who went to Hawaii - money question

We easily spent over 5K while we were there. Its pretty expensive there, so I'd say you can spend anywhere from 5-8K without a problem.
