your subbing right? What are you certified in?

Certified in elem ed, special ed for students w/ disabilities gr1-6 & literacy b-6

Im only 3 credits short of being certified students w/ disabilites b-2, so seriously thinking about trying to take an online course for the 3 credits that way I can be certified b-6 for students w/disabilities...have to look into how much it would cost & if we can afford it w/ me currently being unemployed. I should hopefully know if I got the subbing position by tomorrow (*fingers crossed*) - if I can at least sub a few days a week - I might be able to afford to take a course now...

I know how hard that is. I am subbing. I finally got my first call Friday and am in the Aesop system, but because of my pains I am supposed to be on bedrest, so I had to say no all week. Really concerned its going to effect me in the long term, but what can I do. I don't want it to get worse.

I know what you mean. On a side note - I really hope you are feeling better & that your bed rest is helping you! (I am SO loving all your FB pics!)

It's the 1st time in I dont know how many years that I havent had ANY job whatsoever. Even when I went to college I always worked P/T doing something! Now I cant even get a receptionist job b/c Im either over-qualified, dont have accounting comp knowlegde or companies are afraid to hire me b/c they see my history in education & fear that I will just end up leaving once I can get a teaching position again (which would be the case). How do you possibly get hired under those circumstances? Its a NO-WIN situation. I totally feel your pain.

Maybe you girls can help me... so I'm trying to look into the professional laterals into teaching here in NC, but it says basically that to get into the certification program you need to have been hired as a teacher already. This seems like a chicken & egg problem to me... how do I get hired if I'm not certified???

I am debating making phone calls to schools that have positions listed and seeing if they'd considering hiring me with my professional background with the knowledge that I will get my certification within the 2 years required by law. Should I just start making phone calls? Is there like a base # I could call for more info? Like, should I call the programs themselves to find out the answer? I don't know why this is so complicated... I keep wishing I had just gone to school to be a teacher in the first place, but I also do love being a trial lawyer. I wish it were easier to be both.

sandra - two questions. . do you have any teaching exp or just trying to break in?
and I know you've said but I forgot where you are in NC - I've worked with a lot of schools there and it hasn't been for a while but I can dreg my brain to think of contacts. . it's a long shot but i can try. . also you might know this but its a cr*p time for teaching jobs in NC bc they have recently laid off a lot of teachers. . and cut salaries but you should still def go for it if you're excited. . though WAY different than law. .

NYS you have to be certified to teach in a public school, but I don't know what the rules in NC are. I know there are states you don't have to have your certification to get hired. You can probably find that information out online.

From what I've been reading, the only way to get into a lateral certification program as a professional with an advanced degree is to be hired BEFORE you apply to the programs. It's so weird! Like, who would hire me with no training? How do I get training without getting hired? lol!

If I figure this all out, I'll let you know. Then you can move down here and I'll have some friends around here (plus I promise to cook for you).

Sandra you may be able to take a civil service test & get a job as a teacher aide or teacher assistant to at least get you foot in the door while getting some indirect teaching exp as well.

Thanks for the suggestion, Laurie!

I have my post-grad JD so I'm not sure a civil service test would really make that much of a difference but I'm going to start making some calls and see what the schools say about whether they hire experienced 'other' professionals in their districts since I see hundreds of jobs posted on the websites. It's worth a shot!

I think I'm going to start next week after the fair leaves town.

Haha, my dad keeps saying we should talk everyone into moving to South Carolina. Maybe we can do NC instead. LOL.
