So I am not sure how accurrate this is..I think this was just the pre-vote but in Brentwood a vote was cast: take a pay freeze and keep music teachers, or take your raise and throw all music teachers to the curb. guess which vote won?
It makes me SO sick to my stomach. I am so sick of defending my job and its value and districts like this make it quite clear that we are still fighting a losing battle. The sad part is that music is one of the only things that Brentwood has goin for it right now!
What makes me even more angry is that if this comes up in my district the same thing would happen. People never stop to think about the real good of the kids or how it would feel if it were them. I would SO freeze my pay to save the jobs of my colleagues. I get it. We all need money but imagine if you were the one with NO salary rather than a 'frozen' one.

Lauren, this is happening in our school as well.... they not only want to get rid of the music teacher but they are contemplating getting rid of everything music... including my christmas musical and plays throughout the year which, makes the school what it is and gives the children something different to be able to express themselves...

Ugh...that is totally unfair. The arts are important in schools...why don't people understand this?!?!?!? Also - how it is fair that other teachers decide your fate? Sounds pretty awful...I hope for the best.

WOW!!! Education has just become sooo depressing... it is robbing students of expereinces that they will remember for a lifetime, so they can pass a test and forget what it was on 5 seconds later!!!! All so these %^%$@ principals can get THEIR fat bonus checks!!! And drive around in MERCEDES.
Ugh... My principal got rid of our band/chorus teacher (yes she did both) came in early in the mornings for practice, got the school to purchase instruments.. now where are these instruments??? THROWN in closets!!!! Such a shame!!!

it makes me sick when i hear cutting music or art classes because a kid with a natural talent may never get to realize it cause there is no class for him to try it out on

That really s ucks! It's terrible that it's up to the teachers to choose. I'm always so thankful that I'm in a school that values arts of all kinds. We have a fantastic music teacher in my school, we are forever hiring new dance companies to come in and teach the kids, and this year they started a computer arts class...the kids are learning all kinds of incredible things about photoshop and other programs.
I'm so sad that this can't be the way it is for all schools. Music is just as important as any other subject!

This is outrageous. I couldnt imagine a school without chorus or band etc. I cant believe they cant freeze their pay to help out others. Goes to show you how people really are. Also, goes to show how great the FDNY is when they gave up their pay for colleagues.
Im so sorry. I know the importance of music ed my family is one of all singers & we were all part of the chorus with many solos & songs for us to sing. It was a great part of my education. You are definitely important.
