Totally Disgusts me...what's your take?

Being someone who grew up in Brentwood, I cannot understand how they would even consider cutting the music dept. the high school band is the biggest thing EVER for them, the Green Machine Marching Band is the only good they have going.

I'm sorry Lauren that as a teacher these are things that you have to constantly fight for

well said my friend, sadly that's how it is - people are running & saving africa & haiti, indonesia....hey Im not saying let's not help these places out at all - but when do we start helping out our own 1st? I'd really like to see some of the $$ we are sending all over the place (which NEVER comes back to us) stay in our own pockets, help keep important jobs like police, fire, teachers & just jobs in this country in general instead of bankrupting this nation even more. Sorry, I generally dont like to get caught up in the political BS but this type of stuff really pulls at my heart strings - fire depts are being closed down, police arent hiring any classes until 2012, schools are being closed down left & right & teachers are also being excessed like crazy - GOOD teachers that actually make a difference in their students lives - no matter what you teach - music, art, PE, spec ed - everyone has a place & everyone is an important component in a student's learning and experiences which lends to their background knowledge and helps them later on in life. Why is it that the teachers can get cut or get a salary freeze, but yet the supt's do not? All the political a-holes up in albany vote themselves a raise every year...EVERY YEAR - do I think that's fair...um hello?... HELL NO! We need to start taking back this country and making things about this country. Sorry ladies...vent over.

this is just terrible. i can't believe this is what is happening to our education system.

i am a teacher, non-practicing, and i am honestly upset i wasted 4.5 years of school. i feel so bad for everyone who can't find a job, or is losing their jobs.

in a word: ew.

music programs completely changed my life and gave me a voice in school. i can't name many teachers who usually have the power to do that.

Ok so we are all upset about this BUT what are we going to actually do about it???

How can we make the changes for the better and ensure arts and music is NOT cut? For some students this is as important as math and science!

How are you going to make a differance about it?

Should we protest this school, sign a petition?

What is the call to action?

I totally agree with you 100% Lauren. That's ridiculous. Did they include the PTA and the rest of the parent's in this vote? I feel like if they did that, a lot of the parents might have protested at least.

I don't agree with the cuts at all but if you let the parents take part of this vote they may be up in arms but when the budget vote comes in a few weeks they will flip when they see it and vote the budget down which will result in an austarity budget which is probably the worst thing cause way more programs get cut then..

Like I said I don't agree with the vote.......but it Can get much worse in the next few weeks

UGGGGGGG!!! Being a teacher and also a music person, this makes me so sick to my stomach!! When I was in school chorus/music was my favorite class!! There are so many kids in schools that dont feel like they belong, and the music department is their safehaven.......now those kids wont even have that!!

Good music teachers are hard to find...I had a total raging biznatch orchestra teacher all through middle school, we butted heads all the time, then I went to HS and got a reprieve for freshman year...only to have the HS teacher retire and guess who replaced her???? She made my life a living hell 10th grade, actually had a verbal fight with my father, took it out on me, wouldn't let me play first violin...to the point where I finally said BAG THAT and dropped orchestra for the last 2 years of HS.

I was really good too

So that really s/ucks...I wish I could have continued with a normal teacher, so s/ucks that other kids won't get that chance.

It is so sad especially with all the cuts to education programs that are so important. Also, a lot are cutting Art programs too. I also get annoyed when they say that it is because of teachers salaries. Really? Teachers should be making more $$ !!!!!!!!!!

Also, due to all the budget cuts in NJ now many school districts are eliminating athletic programs
