My mom sometimes picks up shirts and others gifts for me when she is out shopping. Usually she does a good job but sometimes she must think I am 87 years old. Today I am wearing a shirt that she told me looked great on me I think it looks like something stolen from a senior citizen's closet.
I know I am very picky so maybe it's not that bad. A girl in the office told me she liked it (I think it was out of sympathy she felt bad for me being dressed like a granny .)
Even though I hate the shirt I kept it I just figured it was one less thing I had to buy. I hate spending money on clothes for work. Plus I guess it's not that bad if it's getting compliments.
Do you ever wear things you hate just because you have them? I think I feel this way about my whole shirt wardrobe .

Re: Ugly Work Clothes
I definitely wear clothes simply because I have them. I mean, I've given a TON of stuff away (most recently when I moved in with DH a few months ago) so I basically only tried to keep the things I still would wear and like, but some things are in brand new condition but I don't LOVE on me, but I will wear.
I love to shop, but don't do it anymore, so I figure I might as well wear what I got. I do tend to wear a select number of things OVER and over though.

Same for me. It's almost like she gets offended if I don't like things so I just wear them even if I don't love them so she will continue to buy me stuff.
I hate the summer though in the winter i could cover up ugly stuff with a scarf wrap thing or wear a blazer now my shirts are on display for all to see.

::sigh::
Same here, no shopping for me either. I was just saying how I feel like I wear the same 5 or 6 outfits over & over again!! But, I just took out my summer stuff and got a little excited b/c I feel like it's new stuff .
(even though some of the pieces I've had like 5 plus years!!!!)

I just gave away 2 bags of clothes too, some of them still had the tags on them. I hardly ever go clothes shopping now and when I do I buy simple things that will match everything and are hard to remember. I wear things over and over all the time. I am glad I am not the only one .

Re: Ugly Work Clothes
I have a couple of work outfits that I rotate. Not going to win any fashion awards with them, but I'm not here at work to impress anyone with my fashionable wardrobe. Basic suits when I need to wear them, I dress them up with pearls and scarves, or dress them down with tees.
I tend to buy basics for work, just like Garanimals, stuff that can be mixed and matched easily. Lots of black and neutrals in my closet, and countless white shirts.
Sigh, when did clothes shopping become a luxury ? I just don't seem to have any extra money to spend on clothes (but I did buy 7 pairs of shoes at Tanger for under $200).

Re: Ugly Work Clothes
I feel like I have one wardrobe for each season and then when I take out that set of clothes I just wear them over and over again until the seasons change.
If I don't catch myself I will even wear the same thing on the same day each week (Outfit A on Monday, Outfit B on Tuesday)

Re: Ugly Work Clothes
I have tons of clothes that I don't even like but I still wear them because they fit and I don't want to spend a lot on a new wardrobe, so I wear what I've accumulated over the years. I usually don't get rid of clothes until they wear out (I am cheap like that.) ETA: My mother does the same thing. I usually just give it back to her but sometimes I feel bad and keep it.

Not really. LOL Its not vanity as much as my job. I am paid to be attractive. Sad but true. I work a a really prestigious office at the front desk among antiquities (bosses included ) so I have to dress the part.
Also I find if I wear clothing I doon't feel attractive in or colors I hate, I tend to feel more yucky. My fave colors to wear are brights; red, pinks, oranges and yellows. So most of my closet is in that palette.

Re: Ugly Work Clothes
I recently went through my closet and got rid of (donated) all of the stuff I do not wear. I have so many clothes that I am holding onto 'just in case'. Well it has been a few years since the last time I wore them so I had to part with them. Otherwise I try them on a million times and am like yeah I can wear this; then I try it on in the morning before work and wonder what am I thinking and either change or feel uncomfortable the entire day.

Re: Ugly Work Clothes
My work wardrobe is horrendous!! I am a speech teacher and my district sends me into the local yeshivas to service their students. Out of respect I wear skirts and shirts that cover my chest (right to the bottom of my neck). It is not in my district contract to have to wear skirts but, I would look like a big outcast and uncomfortable if I didn't.

I totally feel ya, Catherine. I hate my work clothes. I never feel like I know how to dress...I have to be comfortable because I stand all day and move around alot...and I feel like I have no style at all. And I'm too poor to buy anything nice anyway. Same old mix & match boringness.
One day a 1st grader had a question that stung. He says 'Why do you wear those pants every day?' How bad did I feel!? Okay maybe I wear this one pair once a week...and I guess I kept wearing it on the days he comes to music!
Then the other day, a 2nd grader asked 'How come you look so nice today?' I responded 'And I don't look nice every day?' And he pointed out that I was wearing high heels for a change. Hmmmm....pink sandbox anyone?

exactly!
only i'm not paid to be attractive, but i still hate to wear clothes just because i have them. my poor closet is full of stuff that i don't wear anymore and i technically could, but if i wear it 'just because' i'll feel like i'm a walking fasion police ticket. oh...nevermind...i feel like that ALL the time

LOL thats cute. Honestly when I start teaching again my wardrobe will change. It did when I student taught because my little guys were GRABBY. Dirty fingers on clean clothes=dirty clothes so I stopped weering what I would to the office and went for the same 3 pairs of slacks that i rotated and shirts I didn't mind getting crayon or kiddie grub on.
I will still try to look a little on the ncier side though because I have the clothes already and I want to eventuallyy be an administrator so I want to convey a certain image.

Re: Ugly Work Clothes
I wish I could blame my mother for my ugly work clothes, but I had to stop that years ago; I told her if she buys me one more jacket with a peplum i'm going to burn it right in front of her. She's over it now.
Unfortunately I have made many fashion mistakes, the typical scenario is: buy something because its a 'great deal'. 5 months later, there it sits in my closet, tags still attached, but past the return/exchange window. Taunting me by its very presence.
Recently I did a very thorough clean out of the closet. Guess what, it turns out I DO have enough closet space, ain't that a kick in the head?
But I'm kind of fussy about work clothes, I need to be comfortable, but if I have to work, then I want to look cute doing so too. To have to work and wear uglies is just adding insult to injury IMHO. And Cat, never underestimate the power of the peep toe pump, which I know you love so; it can TOTALLY distract the viewer from an ugly blouse!!

are you still wearing them today? I am officially an old lady and cannot handle being out late on a school night anymore
