Unlicensed Day Care

Unlicensed Day Care

Let me start by saying that I am NOT trying to start drama.....

I would like to know why someone would take their child to an licensed day care center.

I do not understand and thought that someone could shed some light on this for me.

TIA

Unlicensed day care- as in, In someones homes?
My mom does this over the summer, when parents that are in her community can not afford to send their children to some one else. She knows these people from her neighborhood and she is a help to them.

My mom's friend does this also for people in her neighborhood. She knows them all. And does not charge them more than 10.00 and hour.

I wouldn't send children to some one that I didn't personally know-

The child who choked on a carrot last week was at an unlicensed day care facility.

I think that usually poeple do this bc of financial reasons.Often it is a family friend/neighbor that they know and trust.

I also wanted to add that is an incredibly sad tragedy that a child died. But it is not like the unlicensed day care was beating the child. A child can choke anywhere, licensed or unlicensed.

I was going to say the same thing. I think that things happen all the time that are sad,, but I would trust my Mom over any day care facility!

I fell down a flight a steps when I was 4 at a day care facility,, run by NY state and I have a scare from the 36 stiches I needed from it.-

But this day care was a commercial day care...not in someone's home....

How can a commercial daycare work without a license without them getting caught? And did the parents know??

my mother and i were watching my nephew and we gave him 'nursemaid's elbow' meaning that we pulled it out of the socket. . . he was falling and we went to catch him and pulled it right out!

Such a sad story.

Licensed or not, the little girl found the carrots (they were not hers). She could have done the same thing at a lic. day care.

yes ITA, my sister and her friends do this in the summer time, they all rotate weeks, to accommodate everyone's works schedule. Yes it's hectic with all the kids, but it helps everyone out

Re: Unlicensed Day Care

As a nys licensed provider I don't believe people should bring their children to an unlicensed daycare. Being licensed is a lot of work, including 60 hours yearly of training, being cpr certified, certified to administer medication, unannounced visitation from NYS. Licensed providers also belong to a state monitored food plan. Insuring healthy food for the children. Most licensed providers also carry insurance. The number one reason why people go to unlicensed provider is because they cannot afford licensed care.

There are many unlicensed providers who do a wonderful job. Most of these people do not want to spend the money to become licensed. They do not want to deal with the hassle of all the rules (about 200 pages of bi-laws). They do not want to have someone watching over, and showing up unannounced. However, some unlicensed providers are not safe environments for children. People are not educated in early childhood development.

to my understanding they were not licensed for children under 3. They were liscensed to watch other children that were older.

But, what I had heard you can watch a certain amount of children unlicensed (i think 2) but after that you need a license. Not positive of the exact details of this rule.

Yes, I was just about to say this. The daycare where that happened was NOT unlicensed. They’re a real daycare facility, it’s just that they are not permitted for toddlers and a toddler was there anyhow. I have to be honest and say that this happens a lot. At the place where I used to work a few years ago, they did this all the time and it pissed me off so bad. We were only licensed for 3 years and up but would still get some younger children in because of whatever reason. Plus we’d even go over the amount as well. I believe it was supposed to be about 8 kids to 1 adult in my classroom, but I’d still be left alone with 14 or so 3 year olds. I hope that this sad story opens a few eyes and that daycare facilities get a lot more CAREFUL!!

So, I'm assuming that there are different (or additional) requirements for taking care of children under the age of 3?
