UPDATE: How ugly would this look?

We want to host a holiday dinner in December.

I have holiday china, goblets, but no cups or mugs.

So, how ugly would this look?

dinner plate

wine glass

the only mug I have for coffee/tea

Guess what I bought today? 4 of the matching cups and saucers

I got them at the Lenox outlet in Secaucus. Together, they were $24 ($101 total after tax). They were marked 'second quality' but, I fished through THEM ALL and found PERFECT ones!

I already own all of the pieces posted, so I can't swap out the black for white.

It's a matter of using what I already own, or buying new holiday mugs

I wouldn't bother with new holiday mugs. Just clear off all the plates before you put the mugs out!! its no big deal!! Put it on a cute holiday napkin and you are set !

I'm pretty sure no one will freak out because your mugs don't match. And I wouldn't put mugs out until dessert anyway, so does it really matter???

This is what I was going to say - wouldn't the dinner dishes be off the table by dessert?

i don't think it would look ugly at all! If you are really strapped for cash why not hit a target or something and get a set of green mugs.

The napkin idea is a great way around it too!

You can always use hot/cold disposable cups for coffe or tea

Do you have regular China? What do the cups look like? If they are in the beige family, maybe you could use those?

Or maybe you could buy tea cups that don't have a holiday pattern on them, but will go with your holiday China, that way you could use them again.

Although, I wouldn't worry- when DH's aut uses the fine china for diner & dessert, we have Disney mugs for coffe & tea.

our regular is white, platinum rimmed china...

We do the same - cause they're bigger!!

Do you have to have the matching mugs? If not, take a ride to the Lenox and the Pfaltzgraf outlets this summer, I bet you can get relatively cheap sets of holiday mugs this time of year there. Then, it won't completely clash but won't cost you a ton.

Why don't you use your china (or other everyday dishes) for dessert and the holiday for dinner only?

If someone comes to your house, has a great meal that you prepared and doesn't like that your mugs don't match, SCREW 'EM.

They don't have to come back.

Whatever you have is fine. People come for the company and the fun; not for the perfectly set table.

That seems like a lot of $$ just to have four matching mugs (how many place settings do you have? Or how many guests would you have?)
