Update on my mom

Update on my mom

I figure I owed you ladies an update since you were so sweet to offer prayers...

Well, we didn't get the news we were hopefully expecting last night after her lumpectomy. The doctor- and we- were hopeful it did not spread and she would only need radiation. When they removed the lump, three of her lymphnodes lit up, which means it has spread. She will need chemo, and possibly a mastectomy- but we won't know that for sure til the end of the week. They still have to test the other lymphnodes that were removed...pray it hasn't gone that far!!!

I know things could be much worse...we were just expecting something more positive. My sisters and I weren't even nervous during the surgery- we felt so good about it- and then this news just took the wind out of us.

I know she'll be okay. So many women survive from this. I guess sometimes you just wish it would spare those that have already been through so much. She already had to deal with her own mom's cancer (not breast) and my dad's prostate cancer...I still don't believe it's happening sometimes.

Thank you all SO MUCH for the prayers and support. The more prayers, the better. I know she'll be okay- we're just in for a tough year.

Thanks again.

Oh tara...I'm sorry honey. But as you said, it could be much worse. Spreading doesn't mean untreatable. She's just going to have a very hard time with the chemo expecially because it is breast cancer and as women, our breasts are such a part of how we see ourselves. I actualyl have known 4 women clsoe to me and my family who have gone through it and its very hard but there's light at the end of the tunnel most of the time.

Just try and support her as best as you and your family can and keep praying. we all will be adding our own prayers I am sure.

Just an aside..not to eb morbid or anything, but cancer seems to really run in yoru family as it does in mine. Please make sure you go for your own yearly checkups. One of the women I knew who lost both ehr breasts was only 24 at the time. because it runs so prevalently in my own family, I am religious about my chekups.

Re: Update on my mom

Tara I have been thinking about you today. I'm sorry you didn't get the news you were hoping for but like the other girls said, this is still very treatable.

You said you were in for a tough year, and lord knows you're right, but think of it this way - you're so lucky to have your family and your DH around you as you go through this, and your mom is lucky to have wonderful daughters like you and a great son-in-law to support her during this difficult time. So many women have to go through this alone and scared, and so many kids (even adult kids...lol) have to shoulder the caretaking without the help of siblings. I know you have been this before and can't help imagining any number of scenarios, but you and your sisters will do a world of good for yourselves and your mom if you stay positive. Sing goofy songs during Christmas. Bake cookies. Watch movies. And lean on your DH when you are feeling scared. Nobody can promise you that everything will be fine, but there have been so many advances made in treating this disease that you should hold on to as much hope as possible. My friend's mom beat breast cancer against really tough odds and she's been cancer free for 10 years now. Doctors are amazing - and studies show that a positive attitude really helps people in these situations.

OK, I'm rambling - here are a few

Re: Update on my mom

Thank you all so much....the support I've been given not only with my friends but here on LIW has been so helpful. It helps to hear form those who have been there. My principal went through the exact same thing as my mom, so we had a good talk today. I cannot get over how many women have had it or have someone close to them that have had it - it's all over my school, it's so sad. But it's really a comfort to talk about it with people who understand.

Thank you!!
