Update: 12/6/08 I went into the doctors office extremely nervous. When it was time I just laid there and woke up later on my tummy in a different room. The doctor said everything went fine. I got 2 meds and DH has a time schedule rolleyes:
I am ok, but just in alot of pain and extremely tired. DH asked if i heard the neighbors house alarm go off 'i was like no'. He said what about the earthquake? I can't believe i didn't even feel the bed move! ( We live in Cali) Well, he just made a smoothie and i been summoned. Thank you for all your advice!
12/5/08 I am getting 3 of my wisdom teeth pulled tom. I am so afraid of the pain and they have to put me to sleep. I am so scared
The Doctor said he can sedate me but i can still be aware of what is going on if i want. Should i complete be asleep or should i be half alert to calm myself?
Any advice?:

Re: I am soo afraid...
Def get knocked out!!!!! I sat in the chair, fell asleep, woke up and it was over.
I went back to work 2 days later and remember sitting in a presentation and watching all of the pretty stars floating past me. I was so high. I'd say u start to feel better in 2-3 days and about 5 for a ful recovery (every1 is different though).
Good luck!

Re: I am soo afraid...
I used novacaine only. I am afraid of being put to sleep. I had no problems at all. I was out shopping the same day.
Remember to ice it alot and dont drink/eat extreme hot or cold liquids/food.
Feel better!!!

Re: I am soo afraid...
okay this advice is comming from someone who only had novacain getting 4 wisdom teeth pulled and one was fully impacted and another partly impacted. GET PUT TO SLEEP!!!!!!!! I went the first time and they could only do 2 because I started crying because I couldnt stand the feeling of the pressure. it was more pressure than pain. So I had to go back a second time like a few months later. The dr. who did mine doesn't put people to sleep. he did a good job and everything was fine, no infections etc. However, if I did it again, I'd be sure to be put out! You will be sore afterwards, especially if any are impacted, but take some pain killers and put on a movie to take your mind off of it. I took vicadin with mine and it wasn't helping (I think certain pain meds work better for certain people) so they gave me demoral and that def helped!!

Re: I am soo afraid...
don't worry..lol. I had two taken out and DH had all 4 at the same time. They tried the gas but I feel like I am choking so I asked for the injection. Well, it felt like if I was drunk...lol that lasted until I left. I heard the noise and felt my head being pushed but did not feel any pain. After they were done I was talking and talking and they told be be quit cause I should rest my mouth..lol. I got home fell asleep took the pills they give you...within two days I was perfect. The second day DH even made me regular food but cut it in baby pieces which made it so easy to swallow. Don't worry, you will be fine!

Re: I am soo afraid...
I had all 4 done a few years back and I fully recommend getting COMPLETELY knocked out. I think its better to not know whats going on and just wake up when its all over.

I highly recommend getting knocked out. you wake up and it's over and then you spend most of the first day sleeping from the anesthesia

Get knocked out! You will not feel a thing, and you will be a littel sore for a few days, but thats what pain pills are for

Get knocked out. I had all four done at once and the Dr. didn't give me an option about being put out he said it is the best way and it was.
To be honest I slept most of the day that day. I took the pain killers he described for a day. I was up and about the next day but a little uncomfortable -- not in any true pain. It took about a week before I could really eat. I was also petrified of getting dry sockets so I was really careful about eating, drinking and rinsing.

I totally know where you are coming from. I was contemplating staying awake too when I got mine done because I was so afraid of being put to sleep. I forced myself to be put to sleep because I knew I would be freaking out if I was awake and it was the best decision ever. Once they have you in that chair they give you a shot and good night. LOL. After all of my worrying being put to sleep was the easiest part of the entire thing!

Re: I am soo afraid...
Had two and two done with Novocaine only. Not so bad, but I'm a tough chick when it comes to pain. Followed the instructions : Iced my jaw, ate soft foods and room temp liquids, took the pain pills for the first couple of days. I was out and about the next day with no problems, actually went out to dinner with friends after the first two were pulled.
It's not that bad, just sounds worse than it is. Everyone is different though. You just have to figure out what your comfort level is and go with that. There really is no need to be nervous or afraid. Put yourself in a different frame of mind - think about all the fun you had at your wedding !

Re: I am soo afraid...
DH just got 2 of his wisdom teeth taken out a couple of weeks ago, and it went well even though he was pretty nervous about it. He chose to be knocked out, which was a good choice for him because he didn't want to be aware at all of what was going on. He said that all he remembers is the nurse telling him to count backwards, and then the next thing he knew he was being woken up and it was all over. The whole procedure probably only took about 20 minutes, and when they woke him up he was kind of out of it, but he didn't seem to be feeling pain. He actually was in a pretty good mood and saying silly things because I guess when you wake up from being knocked out you kind of feel drunk or something like that. I made sure to keep giving him his pain medicine on time to keep up with the pain, and so he never really felt that much pain. He was able to go back to work a few days later, and was able to stop taking the pain meds by about the 5th day. Good luck, you should be fine!
