Upgrading you E-ring?
I was listening to Howard Stern a couple of weeks ago & Gary was talking about how he 'upgraded' his wife's E-ring after 5 years.....another friend of mine has just told me that she is doing the same thing & she is using her original stone for her 1st child's baby/christening cross. (who is due in September)Has anyone done this or even heard if it?

Re: Upgrading you E-ring?
I've heard of that.I guess I never would do it. I mean, yeah- it would be great to have a huge diamond, but at the same time, I feel that after 5 years of marriage, spending 10-15k or more on a piece of jewelry is irresponsible, especially if you have kids! That $ can go into college funds, retirement accounts, etc.
I guess I also sort of feel that after 5+ years of marriage, the diamond shouldn't matter anymore.

Well said Sassyz75...that's how I feel...that money would be wasted. Why upgrade your ering? What could possibly be wrong with it in the first place...that ring, no matter what it looks like is supposed to be a symbol of your love...

Re: Upgrading you E-ring?
i grew up in area where all my mom's friends did theirs - she did heres but her original was soldA lot had to do with getting marrried young - whenthe guys did not make much money and that when they were at work parties and other affairs- it did not look proper
So they changed and then made a necklace out of the original - but they were all monetarily stable people so it was fine
I love my ring and don't plan on changing it because it fits perfect for my hands - but if i were to change sizes and it did not look right anymore then maybe and i could afford it - but i also love jewlery - simple classic pieces

Re: Upgrading you E-ring?
I also have an ulterior motive for asking this. For our 1st anniversary we are buying each other our 'dress' bands & are having them blessed before we renew our vows. The band are very flashy & mine's even a little gaudy
When we first got engaged I was looking at 2c solitares, but I got a 1.5c solitare w/6 accent stones....I love my ring, but the fact that he is asking me I think maybe he wishes he got the other diamond.
How do you answer that???? I told him I never heard of such a thing & then he brought it up & my friend said 'Oh yeah, we are doing that & my e-ring diamond will be in the center of our baby's cross for the christening.'
I dunno, think if I say no he'll feel bad

I agree, but we are already upgrading the wedding bands. I told him over & over tht I love my ring, but he feels like a heel not getting me the one I originally wanted

Re: Upgrading you E-ring?
Maybe I'm the only crazy one.. but I'd upgrade my ring in a few years.. I might keep my original stone, but I'd raise it higher, b/c the setting is all scraped up from my wedding band now. & Since DH took some vacation days to make the mold of the ring himself (not so original, princess cut w/ baguettes), the baguettes are 2 different sizes! One is longer than the other. I love my ring and love the thought that went into it & the sentiment behind it, I would 'upgrade' it a little bitI say, if he wants to do it, why not? If you love your ring and don't want to change it, just tell him that

Re: Upgrading you E-ring?
all my life i dreamed of having this huge rock on my finger and didnt want anything less. my dh wanted to get me what i wanted and i have the ring of my dreams to be honest if i could do it all over again i would rather save some of the money toward a bigger down payment on our house. dont get me wrong i love my ring but sometimes i wish i would have thought about it a little more and possibly upgraded in the future

Re: Upgrading you E-ring?
Even if I won the mega millions tommorrow, I would not change my engagement ring. It was the ring my husband proposed with and has sentimental value that can not be replaced to me.As for giving your first diamond to a baby - I dont really understand that. Why would you want a child to have a piece of valuable jewelry?

The child wears the cross during the baptismal & then doesn't wear it again until it's confirmation, I think

Then what's the point of giving it to the child at all? I wore my baptismal cross all the time as a child, and I loved that I knew who gave it to me and was 'allowed' to wear it to school. If you (a general you) want your original diamond given to your child, why don't you just wait until it's 16th birthday then? That would be really special.
And what if you only have boys? Do you then give the diamond to them to give to your FDIL?
Personally, I wouldn't change my e-ring at all. I love both my ring and wedding band, and couldn't see upgrading them since they are a perfect size for me, and what David chose for me.

Re: Upgrading you E-ring?
I too would probably get a new wedding band- something that I could wear solo without the e-ring.. I really don't plan on wearing it every day for the rest of my life...

Re: Upgrading you E-ring?
I actually know quite a few women who have done this.My one girlfriend will be 'upgrading' to a 4 carat solitare very soon...when she first married, they didn't have ANY MONEY...now both she and her husband are doing extremely well, and they have the money. I say if you want it and you can afford it, why not?

I have no problem with someone buying a ring for themself b/c they can afford it. Good for them! Why not treat yourself to some sparklies?
What I dont understand is how they call it their engagement ring. Your engagement ring is the one that your husband proposed to you with. Big, small, gorgeous or ugly..that is it. You can buy a million other rings but you will only have one engagement ring, you know?

Stef, that is so true. I agree that you can have other rings, but they can't replace your engagement ring, which represents where you both were when you got engaged.

Re: Upgrading you E-ring?
I love my ring and wouldn't change it for the world. As many have stated above, the ring should be a symbol of love and not size.I would rather use that money and put it towards an investment or home improvement. However, this is just my opinion and if people wish to upgrade and they are both ok with it, then you should go ahead and do it.
