Using my crock pot today......**It worked**

Original post by DNicholes

was anyone else terrified leaving it on for the first time in your house???

b/c that's all i can think about..... lol

I'm also terrified my turkey won't cook and it will just be disasterous.....anyone cook a turkey in there before?

Update:

for those that want to make a turkey....

I bought a 7lb turkey (with bones)
placed onions and celery in cavity
spread butter all over
seasoned w/ lemon juice, salt & pepper (to taste)

Place in slow cooker & add about 1 1/2 cups of chicken broth

I cooked on high for 7 hours.

I haven't eaten it fully yet but I took a piece...so moist!! I might broil for 10 minutes to brown the outside but I don't know if I really need to......I will take broth and make the gravy though!!! Wooo Hooo!!

I was successful with my first crock pot experience

ok so the beauty of crockpots is that you can eyeball everything and throw in anything and it comes out great. I never quit follow the recipes b.c sometimes i dont have the items on hand so i throw it what i think would go well with the entree.

here is an awesome recipe for crockpot chicken tortilla soup! The best part is, the chicken becomes so tender that once you put a fork to it, it shreds!
- i think i would classify this as a 'stoup' b/c it is a very hearty meal.

~Chicken Tortilla Soup~

1 package of boneless chicken breast( i buy the thin ones) uncooked but you can cook it before hand if you prefer
1 small can of tomato sauce
1 can of diced stewed tomato
1 cup of water
1 can of chicken stock
1 medium onion- diced, chopped- whatever
1 clove of garlic - chopped or minced, it's all the same
teaspsoon or so of ground cummin- this gives it a very nice earthy taste
teaspoon or so of chili powder or cayenne pepper- whichever you have on hand
tablespoon of taco seasoning - i buy one packet of taco seasoning and use it to season sloppy joes, chilis, etc. so i use about a tablespoon each time
a dash of worcestershire sauce
teaspoon of less of garlic powder
a little salt and pepper
1 can of corn
1 can of white beans

serve in a bowl with some tortilla chips for scooping!

I threw everything into the crock pot. pretty much eyeballed everything to taste. set the sow cooker for 8 hours on low.
. before you serve, take two forks and shred the chicken.
Some people cook the chicken first, some dont, i didnt. What is the point of a slow cooker if i have to cook and prep for an hour before i throw it in?
I leave early and i come home late so it was convenient for me to throw it all in the night before, refrigerate and set it before i left for work.
I highly rec. making this! It's a great meal for the winter!

good luck!! and enjoy!

That is awesome! I'm so happy you liked it!
I have to admit, I never thought of doing a whole turkey in it....will have to try it out.

DH LOVES pulled pork, so that's one meal I make often in the crockpot. I also have made Chicken cacciatore, pot roast, beef stew, pork chops w/ saurkraut, apples and onions and this Spanish Chicken dish.....everything so far has come out great.

I made ribs in the crock pot yesterday & DH said they were 'spectacular.' That's HUGE from him since his mother is a caterer & he loves her cooking

Here's the 'recipe'. I kind of winged it.

Baby Back Ribs
2 cups BBQ sauce (I LOVE Sweet Baby Ray's)
1 cup Ketchup
1/2 cup brown sugar
1 big squeeze of honey (out of the bear)
few dashes oregano
few dashes garlic powder
Salt & pepper

Threw it all on the crock pot on high for 4 hours then switched to low for 2 hours. I'm sure you can just cook it on low all day though. We had to scoop them out with a ladle b/c they were falling apart.

I also took the whole stoneware bowl out at the very end & threw it in the oven for 20 min to brown up the ribs a little. Its oven safe. DH said they were amazing. I have the stomach flu so I didn't taste them but they smelled really good.

i am using my crock pot for the first time today too!
im totally nervous - its on my mind all day!!!
Im making potato and double corn chowder - a recipe from my betty crokcer bridal edition

Never cooked turkey - my mom uses it all the time to cook pork and it comes out amazing!!!

So funny that we're both thinking about it allll day.

I have mine on high and I'm just scared it'll be burnt or not even cooked for that matter lol

mine burnt - and i had it on low - i think it might be becazuse i had it on 9 hours instead of 8 - but my mom said it shouldnt have happened - only the bottom was burnt so we ate the rest of the soup - not too bad - ill have to try meat next time
