Do you have to take an antibiotic if you get a UTI? Do they ever clear on their own? TIA

Re: UTI Question...
i get a uti at least 2times a year, and i always get a antibotic for it, it makes it go away really fast and makes the pain much much less.
I have tired b4 for it to go away on its own, but the pain usually gets to bad, and i end up at the dr office

Re: UTI Question...
get an antibiotic...I don't recommend waiting for it to clear up on its own, because the infection can spread into your kidneys.

Re: UTI Question...
Definitely get an antibiotic. UTI's won't clear up on their own, and if you let it go long enough, not only will the bladder be involved, but the infection can travel up the ureters and cause kidney problems.
Also drink lots of cranberry juice and water. Vitamin C is also good, because the acidity helps protect the bladder.
Be careful with the antibiotic if you're allergic to sulfa meds. They usually prescribe Bactrim for UTI's. I take Macrobid instead because I'm allergic to sulfa.

Excellent advice from the above posters. I hope you feel better -- they are the worst ever! Go to the doctor asap to take care of it.

Agreed. Go straight to the Dr. And get antibiotics. Believe me, you will regret it if you try to wait it out and hope it goes away on its own

Re: UTI Question...
Usually they always give you an antibiotic!!! Definately get one, don't let it clear on its own..it can really run havoc on your excretory system, and It can spread and cause infection in the kidneys

Re: UTI Question...
FYI, but the bacteria that causes UTIs can spread to your kidneys if left untreated. I'd definitely see a doctor!

Re: UTI Question...
You should always do a full round of antibiotics if its an actual UTI and not just irritation so I would suggest seeing a doc. They dont clear on their own if its a true full blown UTI. I have had plenty of issues with this unfortunately. And make sure you take the WHOLE round of antibiotics even if your symptoms subside after a few days. I have stopped before and they can come back or not fully go away and you dont want to do any damage to your kidneys.
Cranberry juice is good for urinary health so drink that and flush your system with alot of water, but cranberry juice won't 'cure' a UTI.

Re: UTI Question...
i actually just got over one..i let myself sit in pain for 3 days before seeing a dr...and it soooo wasnt worth it. They gave me cipro ( an antibiotic) to take for 3 days-one in the am and one at night. It cleared it up super fast. Oh and for those 3 days before seeing a dr i took everything over the counter you could think of and drank toooons of cranberry juice and water and it still did not go away. It can spread really fast so id def see a dr.

Re: UTI Question...
I get them frequently and my urologist has given me a standing prescription, so that when I get one- because its always at 5pm on saturday when no one can do anything about it- I just go to the pharmacy and start on the meds- this might be an option for you if you get them frequently- something that has helped though is AZO makes a urinary health vitamin that I take- definately seen a decrease in the number i get
Good luck & I hope you feel better
