vacation question

we want to go to ireland & / or london in aug. but i'm so bad at planning these things.
Anyone have advice on where to start?
I've been looking up tours & vacation packages on line & there are so many, we don't even know if we want to do a tour.
We would like to do ireland & London but is that even possible to do in 8 days?
Any suggestions would be helpful - thanks ladies

Re: vacation question

You could do it, but you will do a quick visit at each. I am sure you're aware, but it's important to point out, that the American dollar is worth half of the British pound - - and everything you buy there will cost double (i.e. a bottle of water = 2 British pounds, or 4 American Dollars)...that is the only downside. It is VERY expensive!

I would definitely check hotels through Trip Advisor - I swear by that site. I have never done a tour - we went to Italy last year and London the year before and just did our own thing after reading oRick Steve's Europe Through the Back door:

Re: vacation question

We did Ireland recently...in November. I think you could spend a week there alone...I'm sure London would be tight too.

Remember that one 'day' will be the flight (flights typically leave the US at PM & arrive in Europe in the early AM)

We spent our time in Ireland in Dublin, a suburb of Dublin & then we went to Galway by train. It was a great trip. Since you are going during a better season...there are some beautiful drives/tours with nice scenery.

It's an easy trip to plan. You could do it yourself or go with an agency.

Re: vacation question

You can definitly do it. If i were you i'd do JFK to London nonstop on either British Airways or American Airlines and spend 4 nights there. Try to stay on Park Lane which is where alot of the really nice hotels are, and this way youre right in the center of everything. We stayed at the London Hilton on Park Lane. Also once we stayed in Trafalgar Square, which is also a convenient location, within walking distance to the theaters and resturants. When in London you can jump on the Red Bus tour which is a two day bus pass that takes you to all of London's major sights. So no need for taxis or guides or anything like that. Then book a connecting flight into Ireland from there and spend the last 4 nights there.
