Ok, so my mom told me last week that a credit agency has been calling her house (where I used to live) and asking for me..it's just a recording saying 'if you are Diana ..., please hold for an operator' so she hangs up.
Well, today I get a letter in the mail from the credit agency saying I have a past due balance of $214.02 from an old New York & Company card...that I haven't used since December 2004!!!! The balance is from a bill in January 2005. I told the guy that I specifically remember paying this off and not using the card ever again, bcause I had some issues with credit cards and didn't want to get into trouble. He said he beleives me but there's nothing he can do. I call NY&Co and they claim to have NO information on the account since they sold it. No managers were available.
I'm going to call my bank and see if they can provide me bank statements...but I have no idea when/to whom the bill was paid to. I don't even remember if it was the same bank I use now!
Since I paid it off in 2005, I've never received anything (from NY&CO or a credit agency) that anything was due. No statements, phone calls or letters...
anyone have an experience with this?? I KNOW this is paid and now it's a mark on my credit!! What can I do??

yeah i had an issue last year with a card from 2001. Be VERY careful they dont freeze your bank account, i only found out that i had an issue with a CC when they froze my account. I called up to ask why and the bank gave me the number i was supposed to contact, it says who froze your account. I called up and it was a lawyers office that does collections. I was VERy upset bc i said why didnt they send me a letter or a bill in the mail before freezing my account, wouldnt that make more sense. Of course the lady had an attitude and said 'we have sent you numerous letters, you do live on steinway street dont you' i said NO i moved 4 years ago. I was so upset but i said i'll pay it and agreed to the fees right then and there bc i needed to get this over with, it was also right before a payment i had to give to Rh so i was worried about this. I dont even remember that card it was from 6 years before i contacted them so who knows. The worst part is that they are such idiots that it took ONE MONTH to unfreeze my account. THey told me to go the following day to the bank and sign a paper and they will fax it to them. Well the girl at the bank was an idiot and instead of saying she didnt know how to do this and ask somebody, she acted like she knew. I had never done this before so i went up to her and told her my situation and i was told i had to come in and sign some papers and fax it to them. She looked around and on the comp and said 'sorry we didnt receive anything yet' they werent supposed to btw they have the papers and its done differently.
Finally went back a few days later and she still said nothing. So i called the lawyers office and said they havent sent anything, until the lawyer informed me thats not how its done. I went to someone else in the bank and they luckily knew how to handle this. They gave me the paper i signed it and they faxed it but it had to go to judgements office of the bank. Lawyer kept calling me and saying she didnt receive anything yet. I went back to the bank again, infact i went back to the bank about 4-5x to sign the same paper and fax it. Each time i would call the judgement office to see if they received it and each time they said no. I was going nuts bc my account was frozen during this whole time. FINALLY i spoke to a lady in judgements, asked for her manager bc they were all idiots. THe manager finally got on the phone with me and i explained to him that the bank sent a fax at least 5x and they need to find it bc its obviously their mistake. He went over the info with me and all along they said that the file number on the sheet was wrong. UHMMM WHY WASNT I TOLD BEFORE, instead i was told no they didnt receive it. THey would just throw it out since it was wrong file number, the manager apologized and said they shouldn't have done that, but people are lazy i guess. Then i had to call the lawyer bc they messed up and put the wrong file number, and had to do the whole process over. Took a bit over a month to unfreeze my account. It was very frustrating since I agreed to pay as soon as i was told, went to the bank the very next day to take care of it, but everybody else messed up.
Just showing you what a pain it can be, and you dont want to go through this. You need to call ASAP and handle it so they dont freeze your account, if its in collections then you dont pay the full amount, they will settle with you and you will only pay a percentage of what is owed. Good luck

Ughhh! Denise...that's a crazy story. I just called my friend who works at my bank and she is looking at all my old statements to try and find something to prove I paid it. If she can't find it by tomorrow, I'll just pay the stupid thing. I'm pi$$ed though! I shop at NY&Co all the time and I haven't used my card in years, because I prefer to pay cash, so I don't have to deal with stupid issues like this.
Ohhh man- my friend just called me back and my account is negative! Looks like some kind of fraud...charges in glendale, queens...where I haven't been in quite a while! I'm freaking out!

hopefully she finds out info. Maybe somebody got the card in your name if there were charges in glendale queens. But you have to find out what happened, bc unless you prove it was identity theft and you'll have to go through some steps with the CC and they have to let go of the charges on you, so you have to fight this. You can always call the collections agency and ask how you can go about this, and the CC to see what your next step is.
otherwise if its fraud and you dont make a claim for this, on paper they see it as your responsibility
