Volunteering

Volunteering

Have any of you ever volunteered at a nursing home? When my grandma was in one there were so many people there who never ever got visitors and it just broke my heart. I really want to give back after how well my grandma was treated and there is a big home near my house. The only thing is that as dumb as it sounds, I'm scared that I won't be able to handle it after everything that happened last fall

Sorry for the depressing post - just looking for some advice or encouragement!

I totally understand what you are saying. I'd love to volunteer & spend time people people happy but I am such a mush that i am afraid I'll start to cry in front of them or something & make them feel worse

I think it's a wonderful idea.. I don't know that I have the emotional strength to do it..

Re: Volunteering

My mom is an RN in a nursing home and my sister volunteered their for a while. She basically went in when they had activity time and played with/assisted the residents. I think she found it very rewarding.

Re: Volunteering

My senior year of college I took the class Psychology of the Aging. Part of the requirements consisted of volunteering at a nursing home. We spent time with some of the elders who didn't receive a lot of visitors. At first I didn't want to do it because I thought it was going to be really depressing, but I really enjoyed it. The hardest part of the whole thing was saying goodbye to the 2 people I had been assigned to.
