Wedding Debt

Wedding Debt

Did anyone manage to make a profit off their wedding or break even? I'm assuming most, like me, ended up spending more than we received...it's wasn't as bad as I thought though, I just figured out, if I include monetary and shower gifts, plus whatever our parents helped us out with, that we actually only spent around $12-13,000 for our wedding. I'm curious to see how that measures up to anyone else.

We actually made about $12,000 more than we spent

we received only 1/3 in gifts compared to the amount we shelled out for it. i'm not complaining....i knew we would NEVER EVER break even or make money. our families have never really been to a wedding before, and aren't too well off.....so we knew whatever they would give...would be minimal. what can ya do...i was happy that people just showed up.

I am not too sure because we paid everything in cash but i DO know that on our wedding day we still had about $8000 in the bank and we just added to it with our gift money!!! We paid for the whole thing ourselves so it was a great accomplishment!

What we made back covered what my parents spent on the hall which was way more than we put in for the wedding.

Re: Wedding Debt

think we were a bit under the cost we paid for the RH as far as gifts go. Honeymoon, RD, and vendors didnt make the cut!! but we knew that would be the case given what we signed up for and knew that we werent going into this trying to get $$ out of it....

Re: Wedding Debt

we paid for the wedding ourselves too and if you inlude our honeymoon, we only received 1/4 of our total costs in gifts. if you exclude the honeymoon, the gifts come closer to 1/3 of our total expenses.

like other posters above, we KNEW we'd never get anywhere near enough in gifts to cover our costs b/c both of our families are not well off. we even had close to 10 couples (friends and co-workers) come empty handed.

it is what it is, but we had the day of our dreams and did it without being overly extravagant etc.

Re: Wedding Debt

We paid for the wedding ourselves 100% and we made about 10k with shower gifts and monetary gifts. We used part of it to afford our honeymoon so in the end we made about 8k

We broke even..thank god.....

Re: Wedding Debt

We broke even for the hall & food
the rest was up to us
but I don't believe in debt, so we spent only what we could afford to spend.

we were no where near breaking even, but knew that would be the case going in. I think after all was said and done, we received 15% back in gifts.

but we had the wedding of our dreams so it was totally worth it in the end.

We were actually under by $1000 which wasn't that bad so we actually paid everything off. We also tried to stay with what we can afford.

same here. i actually think we only made about 1/6 or even less back....but it was FUN!! and that's all that matters

Re: Wedding Debt

We were lucky and family paid for our wedding. I paid out of pocket for some small stuff just because it was convenient at the time, so we ended up pocketing all the cash given to us...but we used it to pay off school and CC debt so it all evened out I guess!

Re: Wedding Debt

no profit here- nor was it expected. We prob would have done a bit better but there was some family drama on my in laws side and about 40 people didn't end up coming(which was a sure thing before the issues) so we were below our minimum

We did get what we expected to get as gifts, it was our choice to go a bit overboard with stuff and don't regret it a bit
