Wedding gift question

So DH and I are planning on attending my friend's wedding in Sevilla, Spain this summer. He came to our wedding solo, and gave a $50 gift. He came up from DC and stayed 1 night in a hotel with some other friends. I was figuring like $100 (double what he gave) or $150 if we really feel nice....since we are dropping about $5,000 to attend.

But I'm reading that Spanish weddings (in Andalucia) expect like 350 Euro per couple.....which is nuts for us.

What would you give?

Re: Wedding gift question

i dont think you necessarily have to follow the Spanish customs and give 350 just because the wedding is in Spain. I would just give what your comfortable with. i think believe except when they have destination weddings that their guests arent going to be as generous as they would if the wedding was local.

Re: Wedding gift question

She is from Sevilla.....and was our tour guide on our Honeymoon for a few days there last summer. But I am a believer in the reciprocal gift (within reason). Would you give $150?

Re: Wedding gift question

i still wouldnt give more than $150 she knows your spending so much to go to the wedding i think 150 is generous when you fly out of the country for a wedding.

ITA

i think $100 would be sufficient, but if you're feeling generous, then $150 it is

my DH's family knows that i am from a big italian family where lots of the gifts were well above what most would give at a wedding (ny or otherwise) - that didn't change the $ amount of the gifts they gave me (just my two cents)
