Wedding Keepsake Box

Original post by stacedz

Wanted to show you what kept me busy while we had our blizzard yesterday. I did this from Sonicstef's idea (hope you don't think I stole your idea Stef! ). I decoupaged all sayings and images from the cards we got from our wedding on a oval hatbox of the sort ( I never sat down and looked at how pretty some of these cards were) and found this was a great way to display it.

The white box you posted is very nice - where is that from?

Re: Wedding Keepsake Box

Thanks Everyone!

I got the box at Michaels and it was $12 which I thought was kind of pricey. It was an off white color and I painted it silver (which I would not recommend doing since once I put the glue down, it lifted the paint). I used Mod Podge glue (I think a Matte finish) and cut out sayings, images, etc., (the B&G on the top was from a gift bag I got) and glued them down, it was really that easy. The shinier cards took longer to glue down but they eventually stayed. I put a layer of glue over the entire thing.

Stef, too funny that you think your cards were ugly. I was surprised that some of mine were so nice. I LOVE cards though, a lot of those nice sayings were from Hallmark of course!

stacey - so all you're really doing is gluing everything down? First on the backs of each card, and then one layer of glue on top of everything to seal it?! That's it?! It sounds too simple

Stace: That is sort of expensive. I got a large wooden chest (that im using for this) for $11.

Re: Wedding Keepsake Box

Yes Teri, that is really it. I think some people think decoupage is harder (maybe because of the word?) but all it is is gluing. I have made frames, birdhouses, a cigar box with Gary's cigar bands, votives like my favors, vases...the same way and it is so easy.

Stef: I liked the shape of the box and when I have it in my mind to do a craft I wind up spending more money to do it because I just want it done!

stacey - I'm the SAME way! Once I have a decision of what I want to make, I'll buy the materials regardless! I actually don't think the price for the box isn't too bad - I wouldn't expect to pay much less for a wooden box, even if it is bare.

Thanks again for all the details - I'm going to try and do this soon! (How funny will it be if all us newlyweds have the same decorations in our homes - )

stacey: Im the same way too. I dont even look at the price at the craft stores! I dont even know what Ive spent on supplies - I could probably feed the children of a 3rd world country :D

Re: Wedding Keepsake Box

Geez, me too, I have a huge box o' crafts and I have it in a closet that is easily accessible and I went in there on Monday for the paint and saw all sorts of things that I never knew I had!!! Including 2 extra bottles of Mod Podge when I thought I had none, just as well since they are probably a little hard, LOL.

I also wanted a big enough box to actually store stuff in and this box was finished so I didn't have to make sure the paint covered the entire thing or sand down rough edges of wood.

Stef, I'd love to see yours once it is done!

Re: Wedding Keepsake Box

I don't even want to know how much I've spent on crafts these past few years - it's insane! I just cleaned out my closets at home, and threw out a lot of crafts materials I haven't used in a while - 3 bags worth! I was so mad knowing how much it all was to buy, but until I have a spare room where I can store all of my craft supplies, I need to keep only what I need!

Re: Wedding Keepsake Box

Stacey that looks awesome!! Right now I have all my stuff in the second box that chmpgnrose posted but it's my aunts box. She gave it to me to put the top of our cake in but when we got back home it was taking up way too much room in the freezer so we only wound up keeping one piece of the cake and I put all our cards and stuff in that box...but I would like to give it back to my aunt...I guess I have to get my butt in gear and make my own box so she can have that one back.
My list of crafts is getting longer and longer. I thought I was done with wedding lists.
