i see what you're saying, but marriage to an agnostic or an atheist isn't the same as what it is for me.
i have to respectfully disagree with you on that---because i consider myself an agnostic---and i believe in marriage fully and treat it with utmost respect with DH and i. you can be spiritual and not believe in the words that are presented in the Bible. for you it is about sacred religoius bond---which i completely respect. but for me marriage is not just what is defined by certain religions---it is about a spiritual bond. but my main issue that i'm referring to is the government aspect and civil union itself.....so they can have the same benefits as we do
to clarify, when i said that marriage to me is different than it would be to an atheist or agnostic i refer back to my previous post where i said that I personally believe that marriage was instituted by God as a union between man and woman to reflect the relationship/love of Christ and the church.
i think youre saying the same thing as me...that you believe it to be something different than what I stated (you said for you, its 'not just what is defined by certain religions---it is about a spiritual bond.' )
I see both of these points and agree with both......I believe the only thing that seperates me from dating Joe and being married to Joe is the fact that we took a vow before GOD. That is what made us married not the paperwork. JMHO of course

I think they should be able to marry, to me marriage is a sacred union before or not before God. I believe that there are gays out there that should be married and should be able to enjoy the benefits that we as heterosexual couples get to enjoy. Two women should be able to be married and adopt children, same with 2 men.
JMO. I believe that anyone should be able to marry if they love each other and understand that its something that shouldnt be taken lightly. To me, there are plenty of couples that bend the 'rules' of marriage in my eyes, you dont marry b/c you need a green card/or become legal, youdont marry b/c your gf is pregnant....you marry for love and the want to spend the rest of your life with someone in that regard-gay not gay-who am I to say who has more love and commitment; myself or a homosexual couple

I believe that they should have the same rights as married couples have (like benefits, rights to visit etc. in a hsopital, filing taxes, etc.)
however, i do not believe in gay marriage. the word marriage insinuates MAN and WOMAN and that definition has been that way for hundreds and hundreds of years.
I would however support some sort of civil union legislation, but not marriage.

I believe gays should have the same rights as heterosexuals. Their rights should not be limited because of who they love. You can't help who you love and being gay is not a choice. Love is love, and the fact that the government tries to control it, is ridiculous in my mind.

I was just thinking...there are so many heterosexual couples that don't take marriage seriously...or take divorce so lightly...and as someone who has a huge faith in God (but not so much in the church) i still beleive they should be allowed to marry...yeah I am odd that way...pro-God and pro-gay marriage...go figure! haha

However, I too consider marriage a truly spiritual thing. I am a strong, practicing Catholic. Yet this is one of the main problems I have with my organized religion.

I am close to many people in same-sex relationships. At least one of them has a very strained (at best) relationship with his parents because of how he has chosen to live his life. The thought of them having the only say in his care if he were in a life-threatening situation, while his partner who loves him and has stood by him for YEARS is powerless, sickens me. In addition, I've seen too many heterosexual couples either marry and divorce hastily with no respect for what marriage should mean, or stay together in horrible marriages and really f*ck up their kids, while loving same-sex families face tremendous challenges in being able to adopt. That just doesn't seem right to me.

I think marriage is NOT always a sacred religous right.... If it WERE, I'd insist virtually ALL celebrity 'marriages' be dissolved instantly....
Marriage is a free and loose term when used for heterosexuals. Sure Liz taylor can get married a gigillion times.... Sure, why not Michael Jackson and Lisa Marie Britney??!!
People can get married naked at a hedonism resort (not very sacred in my opinion ) or in a drive-thru window in vegas in a limo driven by an elvis impersonator.
All the sudden, marriage becomes sacred when we turn to gays? Nope, they're just not morally correct enough to live and love together as a permanent unit... but drug addicts, knocked-up teens who aren't old enough to vote, disfunctional celebrities somehow are.....
it's hypercritical. IMO, let gays have the same highs and lows in life as everyone else!

Who cares? I mean why are people so against it?! If you want to worry about the sanctity of marriage, then worry about all of the people who get divorced!! Being gay isn't a choice, and if two people are in love and willing to devote a lifetime to eachother faithfully, then why stand in their way?! The real crime against marriage is the sheer amount of people who enter it and don't take it seriously
