What do you call you MIL./FIL?

I do not call my MIL mom. She has never asked me to and I just dont look at her like a mother figure to me. If she asked me I would. DH doesnt call my mother Mom either.

He told me last night that I am rude because I speak to his mother and call her by her name to her.

I totally do not agree with this. He just avoids saying anything name related to my mother.

What do you guys do???

My MIL requested that I call her mom but I just kind of go near her if I want anything.

DH calls my dad, dad. But, switches between Jean and mom with my mother. We call my mother Jean so it confuses him.

funny this post is here... b/c i actually just called FIL dad for the first time last night lol

havent gotten up the courage to call MIL mom yet... but i would like to! so for now, i just call her by her first name

did they ask you to call them Mom/Dad?? Just out of curiosity. My mother told my siblings spouses that they can call her mom if they wanted.

I just dont see why its rude for me to call my MIL by her name?!!??

i honestly do not call them anything... i just go around saying their name

OK alot of people call their IL's by their names. I dont see why DH thinks its rude

no, they didnt ASK me... but when we were first married, MIL was like, oh whenever you feel comfortable, you can start calling us mom and dad... they have been referring to themselves as mom and dad since before we were married!

i dont think its rude at all to call MIL by her first name... i mean, we are all adults right?!

i am just very traditional... i know a lot of girls on here feel that they could never call anyone mom and dad except their actual biological mom and dad... but the truth is, i dont have a great relationship with my dad and i've known MIL and FIL just as long as i've known my parents (they were best friends with my parents growing up) and they have done SO much for me and DH since we've been together (5 years) so, they are like my second set of parents to me

I call them by their first names. FIL is DH's dad and MIL is his Stepmom, so he calls her by her first name too. He gets a little upset that I don't call FIL dad..but I just cant do it.

He calls my mom, mom and he calls my dad by his first name or sometimes dad.

It's just hard for me because I have my dad and were soo close and he's my only dad....i know it upsets FIL that I don't call him dad, but I just can't.

Same here! My ILs live in FL, though, so I mainly talk to them via email ... and in emails I call them mom and dad -- but in person, i just go near them when I have to talk to them. On the phone, if I leave a message, I just say, 'Hi, anyone there? It's Jenn ... ' No 'Hi mom ... ' I want to, it's just a little strange. They asked me to call them that, but it's just a little too soon - I love them but just need a little time.

I do not think it's weird that you call your MIL by her first name, no. Plenty of people do it. Have you ever had a discussion with her about it? Are you close? Maybe you could say, thinks I should call you something besides Jane. Would you like me to call you something else? Do you mind?

I would have no problem calling her mom if she mentioned that she would like it or something...
I just dont know if she would be comfortable with it so I leave it alone.
Plus it doesnt come easy for me b/c I feel like Im the mother most of the time

this is exactly what DH does to my parents

I call FIL 'Pop' because thats what DH and his brothers call him and he refers to himself as Pop when he calls or talks to me. DH's mom is his stepmom and we all just call her by her first name.

DH calls my mom 'mom' and he called my father 'dad'.

FIL either by his first name or Pop. When MIL was alive, I called her by her first name.
DH calls my Dad by his first name. He only met my mom a few times before she passed away.

DH's mom asked me to call her Elaine, after I addressed her as Mrs. K a few times. I never switched over to mom after DH and I married.
