I do not call my MIL mom. She has never asked me to and I just dont look at her like a mother figure to me. If she asked me I would. DH doesnt call my mother Mom either.
He told me last night that I am rude because I speak to his mother and call her by her name to her.
I totally do not agree with this. He just avoids saying anything name related to my mother.
What do you guys do???

I call DH's mom by her first name because she told me to. But his dad and stepmother were never clear with what I should call them, so I just try to avoid calling them anything.

Dh has always called my parents Aunt Joanie and Uncle Danny. HOW WEIRD. But it's bec he is best friends with my cousin and brother and we have known him for 15 yrs now. My cousin was always saying aunt and uncle so DH did as well
When we started dating it went to Joan (Joanie) and Mr. Barclay. I don't know if he is ready to say Mom and Dad yet. I think he does sometimes jokingly
As for me...I can't seem to call them that yet. Maybe after some time. But my mom is my mom and I have a great relationship with both parents it seems a little weird to clal someone else Mom and Dad. I just call them Mr and Mrs. right now.

My MIL requested that I call her mom but I just kind of go near her if I want anything.
I do the same thing with both MIL and FIL. I usually try to get their eye contact when I address them. lol We never addressed it so I dont know what to call them. I have a weird thing about calling parents by their names, so I dont see myself calling them that at all. lol
DH does the same thing with my parents that I do with his.. except he occasionally calls them by their names and they dont mind.

Ellen and Bob I love them but for so many years its been first names and also I have a mom and dad so it would be wierd to me ..one day they'll be grandma and grandpa

I don't think you are rude. If his parents are VERY old fashioned and specified that you call them something and you defied that, then that would be rude. But if your MIL doesn't seem to mind her first name, then no harm.
I call mine by first names when I have to.. otherwise, I avoid saying any name.

I don't think it's at all rude of you to call your MIL by her first name, it's what you feel comfortable with... afterall, she's not really your mother.

I call them by their first names -- always have. He calls my parents by their first names too -- always has.
In cards I will write Mom/Dad and when they sign cards or e-mails they say Mom/Dad but not on a regular basis.
His dad's name is a nickname that even the grandkids call him so that is not so weird and will never change (our children will call him that too). His mom on other hand her grandkids call her Ma and I have already said -- NOT WITH MY KIDS!

I don't call them anything. They have never made me feel comfortable enough to call them anything. It's fine with me, but I know they have a problem with it.

I call them by their first names as well. I would not feel comfortable calling them anything else.
My DH calls my parents Mr. and Mrs. K - it's on the formal side but it's what he is comfortable with.

I try not to say anything and neither does DH - I just talk directly to them. Although his parents refer to themselves as mom and dad to me - mine don't do the same - it's kind of weird.
I am traditional and I don't want to spend the rest of my life not referring to them as anything but at this point I'm just not sure how to start calling them mom and dad

This is funny, I had this conversation with MIL last night
She has mentioned to me on more than once occassion that she calls her MIL (DH's grandmother) 'mom'
SIL, DH's brother's wife, calls MIL 'mom' as well.
Maybe down the road I could call her Mom- but I don't think I would do it in front of my parents. My Mom is sensitive and never called my Dad's mother 'mom' - she called her by her first name.

I call IL's by their first name. When I address cards to either of them that are from both Joey and I, I write, 'Dear Mom and Dad' b/c they ARE DH's parents.
But DH calls my mom by her first name too... i don't think there is anyting wrong with it.

Mom & Dad...dh does too...DH comes from a very big family (and we're much younger than the rest - he is 18 yrs younger than his oldest sister...) so I would feel weird if I was the only one not calling them Mom and Dad...and I didn't think I would be, but I'm pretty used to it by now...

mom and dad - but i dont say it very often.....
DH calls my parents mom and dad - well actually i never heard him call my dad, dad - but he calls my mom, mom and they giggle like idiots over it
