Up until the day DH and I got married I called his rents Mr & Mrs (even though we are pretty close). Well, ive started calling them by the first names every once in a while (or avoid calling them anything at all). But they sent be a B-day card signed Mom & Dad. I dont want to call them Mom & Dad (my dad passed away when I was young and my mom is my BF). I didnt know what to write in the thank you note. I ended by writing: Hi . . . Thanks for the giftcard. But i thought they would think that was wierd. What do you call ILs? and how did you decide to call them that? Sorry so long.

I call then by their 1st names also. I don't call them Mom & Dad for the same reason you don't. My dad passed away also. But I fill out cards to Mom & Dad.

I call them mom and dad...sometimes I call my fil 'Daddy mac' because my new last name starts with MAC..haha lol..he laughs everytime I say that..

mostly by their first name (so does DH though)
sometimes I will call them mom & dad. I think they wished I called them that more often

i do the same. try not to call them anything otherwise refer to them as DH mom and Dad. i have to face it sooner or later. but i dont see them as taking to me calling them mom or dad. although my sil told me to just call them that. we shall see.

I call them Mom and Dad! It was easy at first but when my mom died it got a little uncomfortable. BUt then I realized that I had had this conversation with my mom before she was even ill and SHE wanted me to call them that! She always called my dads mom 'mom' even though they didnt get along!
But we get along great! They have always been wonderful to me! My SIL calls my parents by their first names and it always made my mom uncomfortable! I know my ILs wouldnt care (they have 2 other DILs and one calls them mom and dad while the other uses first names) but I guess its the way I was raised! And I know its what my mom wanted!

I call them by their first names, which I started doing a few months before the wedding. Brad STILL doesnt' call my parents anything. I think the easiest thing is to wait until you have kids, then refer to the ILs as 'grandma' and 'grandpa'. That's what my BIL calls my parents!

i feel so weird calling my mil mom...if feel like i have my own mom and its just all a little bit wierd to call someone else mom....i think i just need time to adjust.

you know i dont think i have ever addressed them directly to call them anything specific. i think i would call them mr and mrs francione or ralph and maryann but NEVER mom and dad. i just dont feel the closeness to them. my dh calls my mom pam not mom although they are closer he just feels more at ease that way

I called them Mr. & Mrs. until our wedding day. Now it's by their first names. It's still very difficult. I was raised to call adults Mr. & Mrs. or Aunt & Uncle if they were very close friends.
DH still hasn't found a way to address my Mom. She really isn't a first name kind of lady. She's old enough to be his grandmother! A few times he has called her 'MIL' That might stick! Guess I spend a lot of time talking about these boards!

I call my ILs by their first names. I called them Mr and Mrs. X for awhile, and they never said to call them by their first names. However they kept signing cards with their first names so I just started using their first names.
They will NEVER get Mom and Dad from me.
DH calls my parents by their first names, as they told him quite a long time ago that he should do so.

I call my FIL by his first name because so does DH since that is his step-dad. But I'm in still in the 'hey you' stage with my MIL.
I think she thought I called her Mom once mistakenly and she might be expecting that but it's still too awkward for me.
I used to address my emails to her with her first name but since that happened I don't call her anything in them!

Hummm, I called them by their first names, I would like to cal MIL - Mom, but haven't just yet, kinda weird, but I would like to. My FIL is my Husbands Stepfather and we call him by his first name so I guess it's okay to not call him DAD, right?

When we first got engaged, my MIL said...you can call us by our first names, you know. I felt so uncomfortable that I wound up calling them nothing. She hated that! SO everytime she would call and I picked up the phone she would call herself a different name, maybe something I would feel comfortable calling her, and one of them stuck.....Fifi. Now it seems everyone refers to her as Fifi!
(After we got married she insisted I call her 'Fi'. It's so much less formal. )
I don't really call my FIL anything, I hate that! I think I'll have to make up a name for him to!

I call my inlaws mom and dad! Dh wont call my parents mom and dad its alway's by their first name . I wish he would start calling them mom and dad but he wont.
