What do you think of this?

What do you think of this?

So I'll be going back to school soon after getting married on July 4th. Despite teaching for 13 years I am adament that I only want to be called by my married last name. Kids and adults are lazy in learning a new name (we have so many teachers that, after years, answer to both) so I thought of putting the following sign on my classroom door...

(My maiden name was a species of bird and my married name is species of fish)

'The bird has flown away, the fish is here to stay'

Welcome, Mrs. K.

What do you think? Cute? Cheesy?

I also thought that if anyone calls me Ms. H after day two I'm just ignoring them until they call me the right name

I like it. Think it is cute. What grade(s) do you teach? I think it's really great for a younger crowd. If you teach an older group in high school, it is still a good idea, but it might not go over quite as well.

I teach high school AP world history and College Economics. You'd be surprised how immature they are. I've found that it's the cheesy/corny stuff that they retain the most. They laughed for two days when we were reading a document and it used the word 'booty' in it... referring to 'loot'. they all remember that doc and that lesson as 'The booty lesson'

I think its cute...but I think if you really enforce your new name that kids will get it. I taught 2nd grade last year and I got married in December. I left work on Thursday as
Miss Toole and came back on Tuesday as Mrs. Setiadi. From the day I came back they started calling me by my new name...they catch on quick.

I would go for it then! I was also concerned about what kind of fish jokes they might come up with (smell, etc) but since you teach AP and college level, it's doubtful they will act like total idiots.

Maybe just half idiots...lol. Oh, given the work load that my courses demand I'm sure that there isn't a moment of everyday where someone isn't cursing my name, no matter what the name is.

Thanks ladies.

Good luck - I had students and parents CONSTANTLY call me Mrs.____ before I was ever close to being married. No matter how hard I tried, some of them just couldn't get it (mostly the boys - the girls seem to get it )

I made the mistake of using the word pensive once in a high school classroom and they thought it had genital connotations

I think that is a great idea. I'll be going through the same thing myself. A lot of my kids have known me for three years so it is going to be hard to break them of the old name. But the funny thing is that some of my class came to my wedding and no less than 10 minutes after the ceremony they started calling me by my married name. So I guess getting the other kids out of the habit wont be too hard.

Oh, I was called Mrs. Maiden name all of the time before.

I think the elementary students do catch on faster to the name change because they make a conscious effort to remember it and they seem to care more about school at that age. Yes, I think the high school boys are the laziest ones.

I wouldn't ignore anyone for calling me by my maiden name.

I would remind them every single time they do it, but I would never ignore someone.

I love it! I think its so cute- they will get the hang of it.

I am so glad I am starting at a new school this year so no one has to learn a new name. BUT my married name sounds like a brand of beer(but that is really not how its supposed to be pronounced) so I am sure I will have some jokes about that!

You can pick what's left of the brain cells that are still actively working

I've never taught US Economic history per se but you can FM me if you have a question. I'll try to help. If I don't know it off the top of my head I know I could get the answer for you.
