I am an assistant and I answer the phones when the people I cover cannot. I'll ask if I can take a message adn tehy sometimes say 'no, I'll just leave word.' What does that mean??? LOL? I just send them an email saying who called. And I dont put the caller into voicemail... I hope Im doingwhat they asked... LOL.

Hmmm that's weird, I don't think our receptionists have ever mentioned that one to me. Seems like you're doing the right thing though!!

this is the only place I have worked where people use that term. I figure it means let them know I called, but Im not sure. LOL. Not everyone uses it. Just a few of the same people over and over. And one guy calls like 5 times a day and thats all he ever says.

I think that means let the person whose phone you are answering know they called. I get a lot of calls for my boss and most people will say he knows why I am calling just let him know I called.

Yes, it means leave word that he called-no message attached to it-meaning no importance

I'm an assistant of sorts too. 'leaving word' is something a little more old school, it just means to let the person know they called, that's all.

Lots of older secretaries use that term, so anyone who's been trained by them will use it too. It's also more common in more stodgy bulge bracket firms and places like that.

I've never heard that one.

I'd be like, 'Which word would you like to leave?'
