I want to buy a house and wait to have a baby but i just feel if I do that I will never feel like I can afford one. Its very confusing and I am 31 and I feel I need to start making some decisions soon because I am not getting any younger.

I think its a very personal decision. If it were me, i would say have a baby if you want to have one. I think its more important that the baby will be loved and taken care of rather than if they live in an apartment or a house. JMO

we have a coop- so baby is next- we will try and buy a house in about 5 years

It is a personal decision. You can't compare a baby to a house, you know? If you're ready to have kids now, then go for it!

I think if you want to have a kid, go ahead. You will make it work either way. :) Many people have, and still do make it work. You may not be able to buy a house as soon as you thought, but it will come if you know that you are going to be able to still save up and stuff like that.

There's no right or wrong here but for me it's a house. My reasoning is that I live in a 1 bedroom apt right now and it's just not suitable for me, DH and a baby. There's hardly enough room for the dog! If we move it will be a house. It doesn't make sense to move to another apt so we'd like the house first.

I honestly do not see anything wrong with having a baby while you are in an apartment or renting.

DH and I both know that we will not be able to afford a house on LI ever. So, we are in an apartment now and we are ttc. No luck yet.
But, we're hoping we'll be able to afford a condo in 5 years! =)

I came home from the hospital to the house I grew up in and actually now DH and I live in the apartment in that same house. DH and I wanted to own a house first but DH has deciced to go to law school and we just won' t have the money right away. So we are having a baby first. Its such a personal decision. Think about people who live in the city most people don't own they rent, and they have babies all the time. I think people who grew up in the sububrbs are obessed with the idea of a perfect home & family. While we want that too, we know we are mature enough, responsible enough, financially ready, and have all the love for a baby now.

even though I'm 30 and always thought i would have a kid by now, i know i'm not totally ready. We live in a small one bedroom apartment and barely have enough room for us and a cat! However, we're no way ready to buy or rent anything bigger. Plus we really love traveling and want to do a little more of that before we have a kid. I did always picture having a house first, but i honestly don't know if that will ever happen. When we're ready, we'll probably try to buy a condo or something like that first.

I agree. Everybody feels different on the matter. I of course want my children to grow up in a house like I did. I never want them to be moving from place to place. However - my parents had me and my older sister while still living in an apartment. We moved maybe twice before age 3 when we had our house built and moved in. Then she had my younger sister and has been living there ever since. So when i look back on that, I realize that it's a GOOD thing they didn't wait for the house to come before the kids. If they had, my mother would have been in her mid thirties when pregnant with her FIRST rather than third - with 2 more on it's way (since she always wanted 3). Plus it wouldn't have been US then, and the world would just be sad without me
So for me - I'd probably go for the baby first (even tho it would be ideal to have the house)

i dont think its wrong or bad to have children while you are renting BUT if you dont think you are going to be able to afford a house for awhile without any children just think of how much harder its going to be to afford a house after children - KWIM?
i would at least try and wait it out to get the house first, otherwise you might be stuck renting for even longer after a baby comes along....

house was first for us, but that is just us
