What is everyone doing with the holidays and In-laws <<Vent>>?

What is everyone doing with the holidays and In-laws <<Vent>>?

Ok so DH's family is just his mother and brother. My family is VERY big into celebrating holidays - his family does NOTHING - no decorations, no special meals, no gifts and to top it off - they are the most miserable people to be around. She (meaning His mother) wants us to split the holidays (didn't exactly figure it out the logistics yet) and I am sooooo upset about it!!!!!!

Please tell me why I have to give up my holiday traditions to go sit around with his boring family - so not fair!!!!!!!! This is probably the worst part of being married!

Why not think of this as an opportunity to start some new traditions with his family? Or would you be willing to invite them to your family's house for the holidays?

If it is just the 2 of them, why not bring them with you to your families? That's what we did for thanksgiving. Christmas is spread out from the sunday before to the day before NYE. Good Luck, I hope it works out

I have the same exact situation with DH's family and for the past few years we split the holiday and I have to suffer with them...it isn't easy

I would do what others suggested; invite them to join your larger family. We did that one year when his parents were alone and it worked out really well. Our parents get along so was great. Then we idnt have to give up either side and draw lines in the sand because it causes problems in your marriage when you do.

Holidays. i thought wedding planning was stressful. Now we have to try to make everyone happy with the holidays and splitting them up. . I agree maybe some new traditions need to be started. If not split the days up..between bnoth families
.

good luck i know its really hard i have similar problems..

This is what comes with being married!

like others said--take the opportunity to try and invite them to your family's house for the holidays. if they don't want to go--i would split it by doing xmas eve at one house and xmas day at the other.

try to get them involved with the holiday spirit! go over there and bring decorations--and start new traditions with them

I agree! And if you want to spit her a lil' bit (im so abd I know lol.. God's waiting up there to thump me with a bible ) bring over decorations like someone said. Only bring the ones that drive you to drink like the singing and dancing Santa figures. Or teh CHipmunks Xmas Album. In your sweetest voice explain that they are part of your'traditions' (even if they're not) and you want to share em with them. LMAO if they don't let you do it..they;'re scrooges.

Maybe bring cookies. Sweeten them up!

All j.k aside though I do understand, An ex of mine, his family was sooo seroious. Dad never smilled. We dance on NYE. But the one NYE i spent with him, we sat with his dad and watched some old resun of soemthing on tv till the ball fell...Was AWFUL. They didnt even cheer! Good luck!

I agree why not bring them with you to your family. I only have my sister to worry about and DH's brother invited her for Christmas eve day. She'll stay with us and then my family is coming over to our place on Christmas day.

i invited il's to my parents house for traditional christmas eve because i knew they'd be alone with just us and bil if we had to go there (boring), so they are invited to my parents so it will be more fun and still keep the tradition going.. xmas is bigger with them and less big with us so we will go there .

we had this problem with thanksgiving .... we're interfaith so the religion-based holidays aren't a problem for us.

we went to my family for dinner and his for dessert. last year was the opposite.

Aww...I hear you! We have the Jewish holidays and I hate missing one day of my dad's yummy food!!!

Fam will be away this holiday...we get extended visitation with our Jack Russell Terrier Kasey!!! (We work too many hours and she can't handle it, even with the kittens, plus MIL loves her company)..so it is decorating our house for us and we are going to relax (usually it is Mohegan Sun)

Why not bring cheer and traditions to them? I make things I like to eat and I bring them to IL's parties...and it is appreciated too!

Maybe I forgot to mention that I dont get along with his mother and neither does he really - the week beofre our wedding we had to threaten her that she wasnt goin to be able to attend (reaons I would rather not discuss on a public board)
she is just down right mean to me - there is a WHOLE HUGE story to this but I promise I am not lying or being a drama queen

i WILL NOT give up my christmas eve with my family and DH has gotten so used to it he wont either lol
so the in-laws are coming to my moms house but they are just so weird - they are just generally rude and its going to be so uncomfortable with them there! ugh

I am having my mom and MIL coming down here to FL for the holidays. We went to NY for Thanksgiving and split it up between families for dinner and dessert. So it evened.

We are supposed to go to Michael's brother's house on Christmas Eve. We shall see. I am
getting fustrated with his wife aka SIL. We are trying to speak to her about letting us do a few holidays but she insists on everyone going out to a resturant for the holidays. We have to pay for ourseleves of course. Michael and I can't really afford. We need to save for a place of our own. She insists that it is her family tradition but what about my family. Michael wants to make dinner for his family and I want them to get to know my family. Maybe I am just asking for too much. Michael is the easy going one, I am the one who needs to put her foot down. Sorry, but just needed to vent.
