What kind of Birth do you plan on having/have had?

Original post by EverlovingEv

Ricki Lake is on the Rachael Ray show promoting her documentary 'the business of being born' and it got me thinking -

What kind of birth do you anticipate having/have had?

In the hospital?
At home?
Water Birth?
Silent Birth? (Katie Holmes did this)
Other? (I'm sure there are other ways that I don't know about)

As a doctor, I definitely believe in modern medicine and will absolutely give birth in the hospital.

What are your thoughts?

the quickest and most painless way

i am TERRIFIED of the day i will have to give birth - i think i can handle a pregnancy but the whole birth process just doesnt seem like my thing

I share the same feelings about giving birth! Soooo scary! So, I would definitely want to be in a hospital just in case anything went wrong...and where there are drugs which I will most likely need!

And, by the way, how the he!! did Katie Holmes have a silent birth????? I'm sure I'll be screaming the whole time!

I'd like to give birth in a hospital with a obstetrician and mid-wife present. Hospital just in case something goes wrong, mid-wife to have the more personal attention and care women deserve when giving birth

i agree!!!
and i saw ricki lake this morning too. i actually want to check out her documentary. i would just be too afraid to do it at home without a doctor and equipment ready. anything can go wrong!!
i can only imagine how many mothers and babies died years ago when they had to do it at home without a dr.
i cant wrap my mind the idea of not wanting to go to a hospital.

although, i am interested in waterbirths!! in the end, i'd prob. just go to the hospital like everyone else. it's safer.

Unfortunately I've been behind the scenes and have witnessed Dr's pressuring the nurses to increase pitocin and speed up a delivery because they have plans that night. Or Dr.s who have to lay golf in the morning and tell the woman she HAS to have a c-section because 12 hours is too long to labor, which is unrealistic!!

I'm passionate about this because I've seen teh other side and I don't want that!

Sweetie, using this as a reason to avoid hospitals seems silly to me. I've been on the other side as well and I've seen amazingly devoted doctors that spend countless hours with their patients. I think that if you develop a good report with your doctor over the 9 months you're seeing them- you have nothing to worry about. I know that if I were an obstetrician and my patient was in labor, I'd NEVER leave her side because I know what an exhausting, frightening and painful process it can be. I'd make sure that my patient was completely comfortable and was aware of her progress and every decision I was making. With that said - I know I'm not alone and I know plenty of doctors that are the way I just described. Just because you've witnessed someone act differently doesn't mean that all doctors will act that way.

As you can see, I'm very passionate about my profession.

I'm so glad you are a passinate Dr and WOuld stay by your patients at all times!!!We need more Dr.'s like you!! BRAVO!!!

We have a difference in philosophy about birthing practices. You are trained as a Dr. and so you believe that philosphy. If you do some research and read about the nursing and nursing midwife philosophy it is different and that is what I believe in.

It's like comparing two religions and traying to decide who's is the 'true' one and there is no answer. Everyone is entitled to their own beliefs and practices and should be respected for what they believe in. I wouldn't try to change you philosphies so please don't try to change mine or make mine seem any less important by calling it silly!

You asked about how we wanted to deliver and experience childbirth and I wrote what I wanted for myself. I never said this is the way all women should have it, but what I wanted out of MY experience!!!

I find it hurtful and insulting that you think My reasoning for what i want is silly! I find that to be a very Ignorant statement. I never attacked anyone views on here so whay attack mine?

Ok, I think you're reading too much into what I've said. I didn't mean to offend you. I think that it's great that women have a choice these days, that they can deliver in whatever environment makes them comfortable and I will stand by whatever decision a woman makes - as long as it's an informed decision. Some of the comments you have made are untrue and I take offense to that as well. BUT I'm not going to break down every single thing you've said and point out why I think it's wrong. It simply doesn't matter. You're entitled to your opinions and I'm ok with that. What I disagree with is you using what some obviously bad doctors have done as proof that this is why you shouldn't give birth in the hospital. I'm SURE you'll agree that there are a few bad teachers out there - but does that mean that you'll homeschool your kids? It probably doesn't.
Once again, don't take offense to what I'm saying. You are going to do whatever you want regardless of what I or anyone else says - that's the beauty of being a woman in 2007. But when someone asks you for your reasoning behind your decision - don't use a few bad doctors' behavior as your reason. That, to me, is hurtful.

NO, I'm saying that my philosphy does not match most OB/GYN's philosphies on what i want. How many labor and deliveries did you see in the hospital where a woman was able to labor without an IV, was able to eat and drink when she pleases and when it comes time to push she can do it in whatever position is most comfortable for her and not in stirrups. Dr.s want a woman to have IV access, no eating and drinking in case she needs surgery and in stirrups beacuse it is easier for them to see and deliver the baby even though it is proven time and time again that it causes a more painful delivery because you are not working with gravity in that position. This is why I don't want to be delivered by and OB/GYN in a hospital. I have no say in what I want.

I went thorough all of this a year ago when my sister had the baby and 7 different OB's LAughed in our faces when she asked for NO IV, and to push in wahatever position was comfortable for her!

Did you know that 95% of women in Europe deliver their babies either at home or a birthing center with midwives and they have better postpartum and delivery statistics than the US. Why do we have such high C-section and episiotomy rates in the developed world? We are suppose to eb so advanced with medicine but most European countries have better statistics. Its because birth is a natural part of life such as dying (which I believe in hospice care), not a medical emergency.

I'm glad you are passionate about helping your patients but you must realize that you are not the norm these days for physicians. I wish more physicians would be this passionate about caring about their patients not just physically but spiritually and mentally if this were the case our Satistics would be much better!

I truly believe you are a good Dr. I'm glad you are passionate about this, but it is not a bad idea to be aware of other alternatives and practices and be open to them. This is what learning is all about!

Ok, this conversation is obviously getting emotional. And I am not picking sides here but just stating a few facts that I know for certain, since I was there

What I learned from my daughter's birth:
- you won't be hungry. You'll be in so much pain, you'll want to puke. My husband and our friends (yes, we had a ROOM full of people) ate a pizza in my room while i was in labor, before the epidural. I was not hungry. I was scared sh!tless that a baby was coming.

- you can drink. I was allowed to drink. I was drinking ginger ale all thru my labor. (all 21 hours of it) The nurses got it for me on demand.

- I was able to push from any position I wanted. I was on my side, on my back, etc. What do you think, they strap you down?

Is it possible that you have had some awful experiences with some radically horrible hospitals because the birthing experience as you describe it, is nothing like the ACTUAL birth that I had.

Please don't forget, duhlah's (sp?), mid-wives and and birthing places are also BUSINESSES. These people get paid and make money off your birth, just like a hospital. And you have no actual physical or statistical proof that they actually CARE about you any more than a doctor at a hospital.

DH and I are TTC in one month!! I wanted to go to midwifery school for years but decided against it because of high malpractice insurance rates and because the only way I would be able to practice the way I want to would be to move to the west coast, which was not an option.

I currently see a midwife and I plan on delivering at Yale New Haven's Birthing center by a midwife. It's the best of both world's because god forbid something goes wrong I can go accross the street to the hospital for any type of emergency.

I am a firm believer that if a woman is knowledgeable about the birthing process and truly understands what her body is doing and that what she is feeling is normal and is surrounded by people who support her she can labor and birth naturally.

I've shadowed a lot of midwives who practice this belief and it is the most amazing experience to see a woman in full control of her body give birth.

I want to walk around during labor no IV's, eat and drink as I please. Be surrounded by as many or as little people as I want and deliver in the position that is most comfortable to me, NOT what is convinient for a DR. I want my baby to be alert and awake and not doped up my medication and start nursing right away. And, I want to go home when I say i'm ready not the Dr. even if its only 3 hours after giving birth.

I feel that every woman should have the birth experience that THEY WANT, not what society tells them is normal. I know many woman don't share my belief and that is fine, but each woman should have a choice to do what is right for herself and her baby!

Ok, I'll get off my soapbox now....I guess you all know one of my passions now huh!!

Hiya! It's completely up to you and you're entitiled to whatever environment you desire for yourself and your baby but one thing that I think you should consider is actually being IN the hospital and not across the street from one. Thing can go wrong in a matter of seconds (and I'm speaking from personal experience - I've witnessed sooooooo many births during my OB/GYN rotation) and you should be IN a facility that can take care of whatever problems should arise.

You are soo right about things going wrong in a matter of seconds. With my last son, I had a completely normal pregnancy. After being in labor for about 12 hours my contractions were getting REALLY BAD and the pressure was UNBEARABLE!! But I wasn't dilating at all and my sons heart rate was going down. They put me in every position imaginable and it wouldn't go back up, so I had to go into emergency surgery and have a C-section. Now this all happened in a matter of 5 minutes!! They got me in the room and my baby was out literally in another 3 minutes!! I did NOT want a C-section, but your gonna do what you gotta do to make sure your baby is ok. And Thank God, I have a wonderful ob/gyn. My son is very healthy and you could barely see my scar.

Your birth plan is a very personal decision. You just have to educate yourself on all the possible options AND all the possible outcomes. Just make sure your facility is equipped to handle every situation.

ETA: Oh yeah, and I nursed my son immedietly. I was nursing while they were sewing me back up! I told everyone that my son was NOT to be bottle fed AT ALL!

NO I know they don't strap you down I'm just saying a lot of Dr.s want you flat on your back with your legs up when delivering. I want to be in whatever postion possible.NOt just when pushing but actual delivery. HOw many Dr.s have you seen delivering a woman who is in a squatting position on the floor???

I just want to be able to make a decision i'm comfortable with and not what people tell me I have to do. I know what I want isn't what another woman may want. I got upset because I felt like my reasoing for what I wanted was 'silly'

Who cares if someone thinks its silly its how I feel. I have the right to my feelings but I shouldn't be put down for them. I never imposed my views on anyone. i stated from the begining that this is what I wanted and I'm being told that I want it for the wrong reasons.

I don't tell people what to believe in and I don't like people telling me the same.

Edited to add: I'm planning on delivering at YALE NEW HAVEN's birthing center. Not a little town hospital in Louisiana!! THis is a major well known hospital!!

Re: What kind of Birth do you plan on having/have had?

Ok, I've said most of what I wanted to say and although I could continue for days remarking on the many many incorrect facts that are stated on this thread - i'm just going to give it up b/c I have other things to do today.

Here are some final words of wisdom:
1) Your experience with one doctor is not something to judge other doctors by.

2) Hospitals and doctors are under contract and have protocols for every single medical problem that may arise while a patient is being cared for. These protocols are inplace for your safety and if you wish to give birth in a pool, without an IV or whatever other way - then that's up to you but a hospital will not go along with that because according to them it is not safe.

3) Safety first! Please think about what is best for your child when making such a decision.

4) When quoting C-section statistics please think about the vain society we live in. I've witnessed many women scheduling C-sections before their due date to prevent their vagina's from changing their shapes.

5) This is the most important point: there is a specific rate of progression that a woman goes through during labor. Dilation, effacement, heart beat of the baby, your heart beat, contractions, force of contractions etc... If a woman is not meeting those requirements then a doctors makes a well informed decision to proceed with whatever he needs to, to make sure that the mother and baby are safe. This protocol is in place for your safety and if you think that a doctor is doing something wrong - then you must either be a doctor yourself because then you can intelligently judge that he is doing the wrong thing. If you are not a doctor and still feel he's doing something wrong - then he should be fired and legal action should be taken. Doctors don't spend over 8 years in school to later on harm patients just so that they can play golf.

Ok, I'm done.

I just have to throw in my experience:

1) I was STARVING. They wouldn't let me eat so when they weren't looking I had my mom sneak my an apple & some crackers. I went into labor first thing in the morning & I was too nervous to eat breakfast. Believe me, laboring on an empty stomach was awful.

2) I wasn't allowed to drink. I actually cried at one point becaue they would not let me have water. Again, my husband had to sneak me a water bottle. How can a woman be expected to go through labor & birth without being given WATER?

3) I never got to push, but I asked about it & they were saying I would probably only be allowed on my back.

I'm not trying to be argumentative or anything, I'm just throwing in my experience.

There is nothing wrong with that. I have had a child already, so I know what it's all like. I did it in a hospital setting. I know I can handle labor without the drugs & I also know, from experience, that a hospital birth is not something I want to experience again. I hope both of us have the birth experience we are looking for

I say hospital, just b/c we never really talked about doing it otherwise, I would want there to be care close by if absolutely necessary

I'm not going to say anything else. I never answer topics like this on the forum and I took a chance today.

I posted what I WANTED, not what everyone should have and instead of being supported or just reading my post and posting your own. I was told that my views are 'silly' that is unfair. Every woman is differnt and entitled to her won opinion. HOw many women today posted that they are scared of the birthing process? I'm not scared. I've seen it and been a part of it many times. I've delivered over 30 babies in the ER, in labor and delivery, in a home, in an ambulance and in the middle of the street. I've seen a lot and I've done a lot of research and because of what I've learned I've made a decision based on what I want for my experience. I shoudn't be put down for that. Women should encourage each other to do what is best for themselves and support each other in that decision. Not ty to belittle or play down their views. NO birthing experience is ever the same so you can never compare. But you can know what you want ot get out of it!

I also think its wonderful!! Youre completely entitled to your own opinion and i honestly wish more women looked at child birth from your perspective! Its a natural process not a sickness or disease.

The minority of women in europe deliver babies in hospitals and somehow the european population is still striving :)

ETA: The U.S. is 2nd to last in terms of infant mortality and out of 177 nations we are ranked 44 in terms of general healthcare. I think that is why more and more women are looking at other options.

natural birth- @ the hospital.. I have heard epidural horror stories. I think I'm actually going to have my MIL or grandmother present to keep me calm..

I had both of my boys with NO drugs, worked out till I was 8 1/2 months. Both births were VERY quick!! One 20 minutes, and the other I think 39. But both were 2 or 3 pushes. That ring of fire is a killa. My gawd . But because we don't plan on having another child anytime soon, I had an IUD ( Mirena ) implanted in my uterus. It lasts for 5 years, and I can have it removed whenever I want. The on and off period thing stinks, but it's better than an accident that we can't afford at this time.

Excuse me....I didn't read your whole question.I gave birth in a hospital. ( I'm sorry I was bragging about my births )., I had superior care there. Why is this such a touchy topic to talk about for some people?
