What kind of Birth do you plan on having/have had?
Original post by EverlovingEv
Ricki Lake is on the Rachael Ray show promoting her documentary 'the business of being born' and it got me thinking -
What kind of birth do you anticipate having/have had?
In the hospital? At home? Water Birth? Silent Birth? (Katie Holmes did this) Other? (I'm sure there are other ways that I don't know about)
As a doctor, I definitely believe in modern medicine and will absolutely give birth in the hospital.
What are your thoughts?

I haven't really given much thought to the subject...but if I had to chose, I'd do a midwife in a birthing room/center. I want some privacy, something hospitals neglect to provide us women. We have tons of Drs and RNs just visiting us every hour, which is nice, but one or two familiar faces would suffice for me! I think I might be the only woman in the world that wants a NORMAL delivery (just old fashioned pushing)!!!! LOL.....I really don't want epidural....but we'll see when I cross that bridge.

I'm SURE you'll agree that there are a few bad teachers out there - but does that mean that you'll homeschool your kids? It probably doesn't.
Hey now, no need to bring teachers into the mix

I love the idea of a midwife, but with the birth of DD I used a Dr and gave birth in a hospital. I loved my Dr and the hospital. I am glad that I get to use both again.
When I had DD I had a plan, and was able to stick to most of it. I labored at home, had no drugs ( except a local for my Episiotomy, which wore off as they were stitching me up! ) But DD's heart-rate dropped and they needed to use a vacuum to get her out. I think it was my faut for not pushng hard enough, but lesson learned.
Everyone's opinion is their own, no wrong, or right, just different.

Hehehe, LOVE ya sweetie!!! I'm just having flashbacks to a Mrs. Rittenhouse - b*tch math teacher that I had in the 3rd grade that made me cry

Re: What kind of Birth do you plan on having/have had?
I'll be completely honest - I'm NOT looking forward to the pain and I tend to be a big worrier, so I think I'd feel more comfortable in a hospital setting, where if something went wrong they could *hopefully* help quickly. Also, while I'd love to do it all naturally, I have a feeling I won't be able to make it all the way without the help of some pain releaving medication!
I think once it comes time to TTC, I will look into all the options and statistics. Right now I'm not nearly as versed on the subject as others who have looked into it or who have experienced it etc.
I just thought about my MOH - she had a good pregnancy and only labored about 5 hours in the hospital (she did the rest of her laboring before she went to the hospital). The baby ingested meconium (sp?) while still in the womb and when he was born, they took him to the NICU just for observation - they didn't think anything was wrong. However, in the NICU the baby turned purple and it was a bad situation that was VERY sudden. The baby had to be intubated and everything - the good news is that my godson is perfectly fine now (he'll be 2 next month) but that it was good that she was in the hospital and that the baby had the medical attention he needed.
Now, I have NO IDEA if birthing centers have the same type of facilities that would have been able to tend to the baby as the hospital did... like I said, I'd have to do some research when the time comes for us to have our first baby.

Re: What kind of Birth do you plan on having/have had?
I've also heard epidural horror stories which scare me BUT I KNOW that I will not be able to handle the pain. So I will be giving birth in a hospital with meds & if I request water, they better get me some water b/c if not, i have a set of strong screaming lungs on me...

I will be in the hospital. I plan on going straight into a C-section if possible. i'm way too small of a girl to push a baby out -- I'd rather skip the complications and pain and just have a C-section. I could give a cr@p less about the scar its going to leave.

I will definitely pick a hospital. I had a few friends who had complications and I don't want to take that chance.

I'd like to give birth in a hospital with a obstetrician and mid-wife present. Hospital just in case something goes wrong, mid-wife to have the more personal attention and care women deserve when giving birth
same here i'm definetly going to a hospital with a great pre-natal rep. and i will probably have an epidural lol.we'll see if my mind changes when the time comes - but for now - epidural me up!! I'd also like to have a mid-wife present for the reasons stated above...
btw - did i mention i REALLY dont want an opisiotimy??? WHY ev - tell us why there are so many?? i guess it's better then just tearing, but ouch i hear it's so common these days & i just DONT want one!! btw - can u tell i'm another one absolutely TERRIFIED of the birthing process?? i know myself and i know when it comes time i'll be focused & hardcore telling myself 'okay i'm made to do this'...but untill then i'll just get all my pannicks out. i can't wait to be preggo & feel life inside of me & get a big ole' belly but PLEASE, spare me the episiotimy & the pain

Actually the best research has shown that episiotomies are harmful it is not any better than tearing. Women who would tear naturally had less pain than women with episiotomies. The reason so many doctors do it is b/c it makes it easier for the baby to ocme out and they say it lessens trauma and has positive long term effects, which is just not true.

Re: What kind of Birth do you plan on having/have had?
Ev....personally since I have Rheumatoid Arthritis and a gazillion problems from that, I want a C-Section and of course meds. I would of course want to do whatever is best for my child and I feel having a child in a hospital with medical professionals there who can make the best decisions for me and my baby and who can act in a heartbeat God forbid something happens is in my mind the best thing for me and my future child. The bottom line for me is a healthy baby and I trust the medical community to make the proper decision to help me and my child. And this is coming from an attorney!
My extreme trust of a doctor's advice and decisions also stem from my wonderful rheumatologist that always works with me and guides me to make proper decisions regarding my health. And I know that doctors will listen to your birthing plan and try to implement it, but sometimes, things happen which make it impossible. Anyone watch Knocked Up?

Episiotomy's are only done if the woman is giving vaginal birth and the baby's head isn't coming all the way out. I have never seen a doctor do it for his own benefit - it's obviously done for the welfare of the mother and child. It's a yucky thing to witness, but the episiotomy is litereally just about 1-2 inches and apparently, with everything else going on down there - the women hardly notice. I'm with ya on not wanting one - I don't want one either...but if I don't tear enough on my own for my child's head to come through and I don't want a C-section, then a little episiotomy will have to be done. I pray to God that I can give birth in a hosp without and epidural and without an episiotomy, but we'll just have to wait and see.

Sorry chica for the RA I'm glad you have a great doctor!!! I know they're out there and I'm glad you found one. It's incredible how a compassionate doctor can ease a patient. People put their lives into our hands and I love it when a doctor is knowledgeable, trustworthy, compassionate and understanding - this is the kind of doctor I aspire to be.

What's so bad about an epidural? Is it harmful for the baby?
