I'm actually a regular poster here.....but going anonymous for this one *just in case* someone I know happens to be on here.
DH and I have an AMAZING OPPORTUNITY to go to the Middle East. Neither one of us has ever been there before. My long time friend is there.....we have a real reason to go........and we really want to do this. We will be going for 2 weeks. We booked the trip. The only caveat is that it falls over THanksgiving. Turey Dinner
I told my family, including my 96 yr. old grandmother....they were THRILLED FOR ME. TOTALLY THRILLED.
When we told MIL and FIL I just assumed they'd be just as thrilled that we have this opportunity....
She is acutally upset with us b/c we'll be missing the holiday, and she is having the family over to her new house, and we won't be there to 'support' her.
I think this is VERY SELFISH.
My family would never think that way.....MIL and FIL think differently. I am really annoyed by it. In a very *light way* (not using the word selfish) I explained to DH that I am surprised that they are nothing less than happy for us to have this opportunity. He says I'm not being compassionite to MIL.
I think this is rediculous. Am I being incompassionate? I think they are being selfish. What is your opinion?

Re: What the &^%*($#??????????
In one sense I think its a little out there for her to be upset and not supportive at all. If you have a chance to go somewhere and do something that you maynot get a chance to do it again she should be able to be excited for you.
On the other hand~My ILs are the same way, holidays are very very important to them, so I know my MIL would be upset too.

My family is the opposite,,,my IL's would be thrilled..so would my mom, my Dad is the one that makes me feel like crap if i miss something...and tries to keep me here...i've traveled alot & each time he brings up terrorism, wars, or plane crashes...he's so freakin negative...do what you want & enjoy the opportunity!!!! Life is short!!!! ...(if you are heading to Israel i have pics in my album...it's gorgeous)

Your MIL is allowed to be disappointed that you aren't going to be there...but she shouldn't stop you from going on this trip
Have you spoken with her again after you first told her this opportunity? Maybe she had time to think and maybe she will be supportive now.

I agree. Its understandable that she's disappointed that you wont be there, however, she should still be supportive of your decision to go on this trip and definately shouldnt make you feel guilty about missing the holiday.
