a good friend of mine, mom passed away on Friday unexpected. I found out on Sunday when we came back from Baltimore. I want to do something nice for her but I don't know what. I unfortunately cant go to the viewing since it's over 3 hours away. I spoke to her last night to see if there was anything I can do, or help out with the kids and she said she was ok. but I still want to do something/send something.
I do know that I don't want to spend her a fruit basket

Im sorry to hear.
Well if they are jewish its customary to send food.
But either way sending food/gift card to a restaurant would be nice. I'm sure the last thing on their mind is cooking.

Re: what to send
I agree about sending a meal. Although I am not Jewish, my Jewish neighbors sent a shiva meal to my home the day after my mother died. It was so greatly appreciated - I was physically and emotionally exhausted after taking care of the final arrangements, and still had to get thru the wake and funeral the following days.

Re: what to send
I second the Edible Arrangement suggestion. This is always a huge hit... I sent one to my friend's mother when her mother passed away and she raved about it. It can be for happy or sad occasions... it's just fruit!

great idea- when you lose someone the last thing you feel like doing is cooking and there are always extra family members in for the services, etc.

I agree with PP's and think a meal is a great idea! You can order them different wraps or sandwiches from a deli near their house. If it's a jewish household make sure you order from a kosher deli.

First, I am sorry for your lose. Second, the best thing anyone gave us (mom, sister, and I when my dad passed) was gift certificates to get food or pre made food. My mom, sister, and I did not want to cook. Fruit baskets I find go to waste. Or how about seeing if you can get a bagel basket? Food is the best thing. IMO.

I agree! A bagel basket is a wonderful idea! Have it delivered around 7:30 or 8:00 a.m.

thank you, I just called a Manhattan bagel, and they have a breakfast basket I am going to go, it includes a dozen bagel, 6 pastries, 1 gallon of oj and coffee. ( it also includes butter, 2 different kinds of cream cheese, napkins, plates cup and forks and knife)
