Original post by NovemberSue
We had 2 people not show because the guy had a fight with his girlfriend. He didn't even call us and apologize. He called someone else to tell them to tell us.

we had one couple not show up - no call, no card, no gift, no excuse.
When we tracked them down weeks later, they said their daughter was sick (as if that justifies not even calling that day or in the weeks that followed).
We also had cancellations the night before. One couple coming from Boston cancelled cause she was really sick and another women cancelled cause her dad went in the hospital - both valid reasons and they callled.

Re: What was the worst excuse someone had for not showing up at the wedding?
My very good friend Debbie got married Sept 15, 2001. 4 days after 9/11. Her and Bart called everyone and said we understand if you cant come.
I told them, I would walk from NY to NJ to see them get married. Mind you on 9/11 I was running late that morning and was suppose to be in 3 WFC but saw it all from the train.
So its the wedding day and Debbie starts crying when she sees me.
A few weeks later she tells me, how it meant so much to her to see me and that 2 other ppl that were invited to the wedding did not show because they were afraid to drive.
She has been very mad at those 2 ppl because one lives in NJ about an hour from her, and the other lives in VA. Me who lives in NY, was really traumatized from 9/11 was ready to walk to NJ to see them get married.

Re: What was the worst excuse someone had for not showing up at the wedding?
Bob's so called friend from a few years back (who lived in PA) wanted to come, but didn't have the resources to come and stay in NY overnight. She kept giving us the 'I'm so poor' speech. So we went out of our way and booked a hotel room for her (paid for it, we didn't even have our own suite - we stayed at my parent's) as well as organized transporation for her (paid for advance tickets on Amtrack for two) set up a gift bag in the hotel suite, etc. The morning of the wedding, she calls Bob's best friend and passes off some excuse that she couldn't make it to the train station because her father got into a fight with her mother and went off on a drinking binge (meanwhile this woman is near 40 and doesn't live with her parents or anywhere near her parents). The story went on from there and included every excuse under the sun except for aliens landing in her backyard. We suspect the real reason is that she had a fight with her boyfriend, who didn't like my then fiance (probably was threatened, whatever). My fiance was really ****ed off, because we had gone above and beyond for this chick (we didn't do this for anyone else) and he felt she couldn't even make the effort to get on the friggin train! We lost every bit of money we put out - somewhere near $400.00. She never called him personally to explain what happened, never sent a card, but we did receive a postcard from her from California the following month, explaining she was having a great time in Disneyland! Hello?!? No money?!? What a biotch!

Shamee the nerve See how you go out of your way and that is the thanks you get. People like those make it bad for others, b/c now I am sure you are skeptical about doing it again. Oh well we all live and learn.

This post is so upsetting. People are just so rude! My sister in law (my husband doesn't really talk to her...long story) didn't come because husband and son had the flu.

How about no excuse. I have a friend that was a no show (rumor is she had the flu) it is now over two months later and I still have not heard from her. She didn't even call when my mom died. Don't know if she is embarrassed or what. I don't even know what to do about it.

Nope not a word, sympathy card nothing. I am so upset about it. Our friends have all said stuff to her and she still hasn't tried to contact me.

Re: What was the worst excuse someone had for not showing up at the wedding?
some people just dont understand the amount of time and money that gets put into a wedding and when they dont show regardless we still have to pay for them.
I think if you have no intentions of going, then you need to call the bride and tell her sorry i am unable to make it.
if you respond that you are going, then you darn well better show. If you for some god for bid emergency dont show, then out of curtisy and respect you should at least send a gift.
The bride and groom go out of there way and put out a lot of money and to just not show up is very disrespectful

I'm sooo sorry to hear about your mother. Embarrassment is no excuse for her being rude and inconsiderate, especially since she was notified by your friends that your mom had passed. It's amazing we even establish friendships with these people in the 1st place, considering their ability to disappoint us over and over again.
Shamma, you are right (as alway! ). Apparently my husband didn't learn from that experience, because he resumed contact with her months later and even planned for her to 'meet' us (five months in advance) up at his best friend's cabin (less than an hour drive from her home) in PA this past 4th of July. The day we were supposed to drive up, she calls his cellphone and tells us that she would rather meet us on Sunday afternoon (we were leaving on Sunday to go home) because she had plans that weekend to go to NYC and could we delay going home so she could see us on the way back home? Everyone was like 'Huh?'. She knew for five months that we were supposed to meet that weekend at the cabin and she makes other plans? That was it for me, I told him if he wanted to continue a friendship with her, he'd do it without my involvement or participation. I'm not wasting another minute waiting on this chicks presence.

Re: What was the worst excuse someone had for not showing up at the wedding?
I think everyone has a story for this post.
Lets see..DH's Aunt and Uncle didnt show because they were mad at his mother
My long time friend called me five days before and said her and her husband wouldnt make it from North Carolina because they were sick. I later found out they went away with his family( who she doesnt get along with)
Another friend of mine from Virginia called three days before to tell me her grandfather died. It turns out she told me she could of made it but didnt. We had been friends for 24 years.
A cousin of DH just didnt show up.
A friend of DH's from work came without his wife
We had another couple, friends of DH who just came to the cocktail hour and left because their children were sick.
Needless to say, we had alot of empty plates. Good thing we had some last minute shows that werent coming.
Gee, I think that is about it.

Re: What was the worst excuse someone had for not showing up at the wedding?
We had a couple drive up all the way from SC to see the ceremony. They came into the bridal suite and said 'congratualtions, we're leaving now!' Hello?! We had already paid for their dinner. DH urged them, to at least stay for the cocktail hour and have something to eat. There were other people at the wedding that they had known since they all went to high school with my husband. We figured they may have been mad since we didn't invite their kids. DH always thought the guy was a little strange. He's upset that his high school buddy who we hadn't seen in years would be that rude at a wedding.

Re: What was the worst excuse someone had for not showing up at the wedding?
I had one couple no excuse, no nothing & have not heard a thing from them since 2 days before when they were attending & couldn't wait! Yeah right! This is a old family friend , like an aunt (Knew my mom when she was a kid, me in the womb!!) & nothing since not showing.
My oldest friend (23 years) not being able to come. She gave no real excuse & only sent the response card 1 week before the wedding & never called since.
An old friend of hubby's said yes, then asked if he could bring a girlfriend (sure no problem we say!) then he cancels her out a week before, the has the gall not to show that day & give some lame excuse a month later about it being his aunts bday! You had 2 years to prepare for this dude! Come on!!

Re: What was the worst excuse someone had for not showing up at the wedding?
A relative of Patrick didn't show up due to 'an emergency at work'. When I saw him a few weeks later I asked what had happened (he doesn't work in the type of job where people are called in out of the blue for emergencies), and he looked blank and then stuttered out that 'there was a big problem'. Nothing like forgetting your lie and then doing a horrible job covering it up...
Re: What was the worst excuse someone had for not showing up at the wedding?
We had a guest that didn't show up...but then came to DH's aunts house afterwards (where we were having an after-party)!!!!!
he said he forgot about the wedding!!!!
UGH...I can't stand him...and DH doesn't think it was a big deal...
we also had: car broke down 1 hospital 1 date was sick 1 found a job ???

Re: What was the worst excuse someone had for not showing up at the wedding?
My SIL didn't RSVP until SIX DAYS BEFORE OUR WEDDING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! She RSVP'd for herself, her boyfriend, her adult daughter & baby grand-daughter(the only young child invited out of respect to her) The adult daughter shows up with some female friend that neither of us have ever met dressed like she was going to the sound factory!!!! Ummm......do adult meals cost the same as baby's I think not No phone call, no explaination! Then we have my husband's nephew(another one of SIL's well mannered adult children. He's about 34 I think & is engaged-he & his fiance' no show because his Mother(my SIL) was afraid he'd be nasty to her 55 year boyfriend & asked him not to come without telling us. No contact from him since.
Jenhos-that chick is NOT your friend-there is NO excuse for that!
