I didnt imply that this was a thread to bash ppl who didnt give gifts. Just pointing out that what some ppl call 'least generous' is the 'most generous' gift some can afford. Views on generosity and money...I dont think that can really be objective. If you know that some of your family are having a very tough time with money, and they give you 100 dollars or something, you might find that incredibly generous. It genuinely wasn't meant to be a snarky response. I was just sharing my POV. I didnt care to call gifts generous or not based on how much money they gave me, but I certainly didnt say anything bad about those who did care to share that. No intention to offend! It was JMHO!

i guess we interpreted it differently then. i think that regal was trying to say in nice terms, what was the 'most' you got and what was the 'least' you got - and in that sense, then yes, it's strictly objective (as all numbers are).

We received the most money from our parents and my grandmother. But I think the most 'generous' gift we received was from my cousin who had to cancel a few days before the wedding. He sent a very nice check and a card saying he heard how beautiful everything was and that he loves us very much. I'm not super close to this cousin, so the card meant a lot to me.

The least generous was from several members of the bridal party (including family) that didn't even give a card. I'm ok with no gift, but no card, letter, post-it note? That kind of hurt.

BEST---
$5000 from aunt and uncle....
$2000 from a client....who I didn't even invite!!

Worst ---
$100 check from two people WHICH BOUNCED...and I ended up paying a fee and they never sent another gift!

I agree that the word 'generous' implicitly judges the gifts. Even using more objective language, like 'most' and 'least' in this context means we're using a yardstick to compare what people gave, especially since we're talking primarily about monetary gifts here.

then don't respond to this thread. it's that simple. the post was for those who wanted to express gratitude/shock/amazement or whatever regarding the most and least generous gifts received. if you don't like the question, then ignore it. it wasn't the first thread of it's kind, and it certainly won't be the last.

This was my problem with my SIL. She did the same with my shower -- in fact, she never even RSVP'd to the shower.

Techincally most generous was my parents...$5K -- BUT that was also where i had to subject the $$ for THEIR guests that i didn't want to invite. (not being ungrateful, but it wasn't a total gift ya know?)

actual gifts at the wedding
$500 - from DHs uncle, and a friend of my dad's

least generous
$60 from my cousin and a co-worker of my mom's. but both are young college students who i know can't afford much, so i didn't care.

Not so generous....ummmmmm how can I say this nicely? From one of my husbands groomsman. NOTHING, NOT even a card!! Also, on my husbands side of the family again, 40.00 . Most generous, my oldest brother, and of course my mother. Otherwise we were treated very well. But that really doesn't matter, I met people from my husbands family, which whom I've never met before, and to me, that was priceless! Perhaps there may have been a money issue with the others, but we gave ample amount of time for you to save a little something to cover your plate. And what kills me is.... some couples only gave 100.00 bucks. Like it's a BOGO or something?

The most $$ came from my parents

The least came from my first cousin. He and his date came to the wedding and gave us $0

I hope this wasn't us Theresa...I think I was the first one who knew what to do with the card box...thanks to this site!

nope...other side of the family

Generous--Our parents were tremendous, and I had a close family member who was unbelieveably generous as well. One of my old co-wokers too, took my breath away by his gift.

Least generous--one of my first cousins (i only have 3 and am an only child to begin with). He didn't attend, which I understood, didn't have much money, but he also didn't RSVP officially (just gave us the old, well, I MIGHT be able to make it out--IF my HS reunion is the same weekend) and didn't send even a CARD of acknowledgment. He's a photographer, so even one of his beautiful pictures would have been an amazing gift and would have cost virtually nothing. Very disappointing.

Re: What was your most generous and not so generous wedding gift?

We had a number of couples and a person that came alone (but had rsvp'd for two) who did not bring a card, a gift, nada. I believe it was 7 couples or so. We were really surprised because most of these are really close friends of ours in our age range who live in NY and have gone to other weddings etc.

Most generous (besides my mom's gift), was a $1000 gift from my dad. No other gift came anywhere near that amount, but we were fine with that and VERY appreciative of what we got.

Most generous was grandma and our parents.

Yes we got guests that gave us nothing but they have a year to still give.

Someone actually sent us Christmas ornaments.

It is all good either way - but I would like a card either way - I don't care for people who do not
Acknowlede the wedding at all - it is bad taste.

Most generous- $9,000 (Thanks Mom and Dad)

We had 2 people who gave NOTHING!! And one of those 2 people brought a guest!!! I'm sorry but if you don't have the money for a gift, then don't bring your bf of a few months!

Same here. Dh's parents paid our reception. My parents paid for our entire HM and my dress.

Most generous 'ordinary guest gift' lol was $500-from a single guest mind you.

We had a few $400 dollar amounts which was nice since we had SIX 0$0 amounts and 2 that were picture farmes.....Yea, we wont even go there.

All of those people brought guests btw. the Six gave us no cards either and we doubt we will get anything cause its my dad's family and thats how they are..CHEAP. One of them gave us 100 bucks for FOUR people and they HaVE money cause he's always bragging about it. Again..CHEAP but they were 'thoughtful enough' to eat 3x their aount at the reception!
