What women should do BEFORE TTC....

What women should do BEFORE TTC....

I am sure others are wondering the same, so why not? Do any new-mothers, friends of mothers or even women who have been mothers for a while now have any advice for women who want to TTC within a 6 month-12 month period? I know that people start things like prenatals much earlier than when they TTC...TIA!

I spoke to my doctor about this at my last visit. He said to just keep taking my multiviatmin and if I want to add an extra folic acid supplement, which I now do. He said I COULD take a prenatal but it wasn't necessary.

I'm also just trying to eat healthier and exercise regularly. I start my LAST pack of bc pills on Saturday!!

I would say, if not a prenatal vitamin, at least take folic acid. I just read about this again, and I believe the recommended daily dosage is 480 mcg.

i am going to talk to my doctor about that in march at my next appointment....im not TTC anytime soon but i know that at least a year before we start trying i want to stop eating tuna and shrimp - i eat a lot of that stuff now and i dont think its good to have built up in your system.....i also drink a lot of diet soda, use sweetners - i want to cut that stuff out too like a year before we start trying as well.....also smoking, i smoke socially but i want to stop for good for at least a year before we try - i dont know, basically anything you shouldnt do or should avoid while being pregnant i want to not do for a year before but who knows, an accident could happen at any time of course we are using methods to prevent that from happening - but if it did, then all that cleansing of the body would be out the window!

I spoke with my doctor about it and have an appointment in a few weeks to go see her. She told me that they will do some prenatal blood work. She recommends being off the pill for 6 months but it isn't necessary. She also told me that I should either take a multivitamin and folic acid or prenatal vitamins. Since I don't do well with vitamins at all I will probably start with prenatal early just so my body can get used to them.

I started taking a multivitamin with folic acid and flax seed oil for omega 3 fatty acids.
I also went to the GYN, regular doctor AND the dentist ( didnt want to have to go through any dental work while pregnant )

*we are not TTC yet and have no plans too, I am just psychotic with planning.

Folic acid is extremely important for the baby's neural (brain) development. That and DHA. It's good to have this is in your system before getting pg and is included in all prenatal vitamins as its absolutely necessary during pregnancy. All prenatal include folic acid. You can def. start taking prenatals when TTC or even prior to then. They're really just a souped up version of regular multivitamins and you can get then OTC, once you become pregnant you might want to (though it's not necessary) switch to a prescription prenatal.

Re: What women should do BEFORE TTC....

The recommended daily dosage of folic acid is 400 mcg. For TTC and pregnant women it's 800. Your multi should have 400, and then an extra folic acid supplement of 400 will be plenty.

Folic acid reduces the risk of the baby having neural tube defects, most common spina bifida.

I copied this from on-line:

Folic acid, also known as folate, is a water-soluble B vitamin. Folic acid is necessary for proper cell growth and development of the embryo. When taken one month before conception and throughout the first trimester it has been proven to reduce the risk for an neural tube defect-affected pregnancy by 50 to 70 percent. Two-thirds of women in the United States are not getting enough of this important vitamin. (CDC, March 2002)

The U.S. Public Health Service recommends that all women of childbearing age get 400 micrograms (or 0.4 mg) of folic acid every day. Though it is recommended that women consume no more than 1,000 micrograms of synthetic folic acid a day, even in very high amounts folic acid is non-toxic.

There is some research suggesting that folates may reduce the incidence of recurrent miscarriage, preterm delivery and low birth weight as well. Folic acid may also play a role in protecting against other birth defects, as well as some forms of cancer and heart disease.

Folates are present in a variety of foods and occur in especially high levels in liver, fortified or whole-grain breads and cereals, dried peas and beans, leafy vegetables, fruit and yeast.

Folate-rich foods

Fruits,
Dark-green leafy vegetables (e.g. spinach and turnip greens),
Dried beans and peas
Folic acid-fortified grain products and breakfast cereals

Folate can be lost from foods during preparation, cooking, or storage. To retain folic acid in foods:

Serve fruits and vegetables raw whenever possible.
Steam, boil, or simmer vegetables in a minimal amount of water.
Store vegetables in the refrigerator.

you can also take a women's multivitamin - the one i have and pretend to take daily has 400 mg of folic acid. It's called Women's Once and is by Rainbow Light; I get it at the chemist down the block.

Multivi's are so huge I can't imagine having to take two pills... maybe when I'm closer to being ready in like 2011 I'll start a folic acid supplement or prenatals. [insert scared sh1tless emoticon here]

When I told my dr. we wanted to TTC he told me we would get me off the pill 6 months before the wedding cause we knew we were going try to start right away. I also took Folic Acid every day 400 mg and started to take prenatals at night right before the wedding!

My gyno told me that the 6month rule was bogus he said he reccomends getting off BC and going through one or two full cycles before TTC but if you didnt it is okay...I was surprised

I also was like I might come of BC right after wedding bc I dont want being on BC to make it hard for me to have prob's and he was said 'coming off the pill a year earlier wont change anything honestly if your going to have probs TTC you just will'

in other words the pill doesnt really effect that much this is what h told me anyway

Re: What women should do BEFORE TTC....

I wanted to come off the pill because I was never ever regular. I would get it like every 3 months when I wasnt on it. I stopped taking it a month ago and Ive yet to get my little friend.

Im so nervous that when we're ready its going to be hard for us because I dont have a regular flow.

Ah what do I know lol!! I just listened to what he said and did it and we are pregnant but I am sure it didn't have anything to do with getting off the pill! But i've heard that before as well.

Re: What women should do BEFORE TTC....

DH and I are TTC and my doctors are not really recommending anything. I told my dr I started pre-natal (One A Day--it's the only one my stomach can handle) and she said that was good.

I do not Ov regularly due to PCOS, so after researching I've found the only helpful solution is Ov Tests taken every AM.

It was also recommended by family members to stop eating shellfish, soft cheeses, and cold cuts because you just never know! (if you're actively trying)
