I woud tell them that you were confused about whether they gave you a gift or not. Say that although you feel awkward, you have to ask because you want to make sure you didn't lose anything. A lot of the time, gifts were accidentally misplaced, are on their way, etc.
I had this situation with two bride maids. I asked one of them if I lost their gifts and said I was worried. She said that she and the other couldn't afford a gift because of all of the previous expenses related to my wedding. I said that totally fine. Low and behold they send me a gorgeous 600 count sheet set.

Honestly, the real purpose of thank you cards is to show appreciation for a gift, not just mere attendance.

I gave them nothing. However, if they were in my BP I would have sent a thank you for being part of my day. Other than that, nada.

BTW....... yesterday we received another wedding gift. We've been married over 7 months now. But that was from someone that didn't attend.

Honestly? Just don't send them a thank you card. If you get something later on, send one then.

As for the people in your BP, what is their financial situation? I mean, my BIL and SIL were both in my wedding and they didn't give us a gift. BUT my SIL had just gone back to work after her unpaid maternity leave and they had just bought a house. They rented a tux, paid for a dress and alterations, paid for a hotel room for two nights and drove up from Baltimore. So, honestly, I am not upset they didn't give us a gift. All of those things cost money and yeah, they COULD have planned ahead, but things happen, life happens and I'd rather them be part of our day then be upset that they didn't give us a gift.

i agree with this and the post about the 'intention' of a thank you card.

I'm in the same position, a wedding party member didn't give us a thing...not even a card. I still sent a thank you though -- a thanks for attending, for being part of our day, blah blah

I sent thank yous to everyone who stiffed us (I think we had 2 or 3 stiffers + 1 check bouncer) Those people got cards that said 'thank you for coming to our wedding. We're so happy you celebrated with us.'

If they were in my BP, I would still send them a thank you. If it was a guest, I wouldn't.
