You need the originals but if you get a certified copy from Town Hall, you can use that too...They actually suggested I send the Certified Copy to the passport department
FYI - I haven't needed any extra copies other than the one provided by Town Hall.....and I've completed the name-change process (except for some department store credit cards.
I brought our original to DMV and SS but they didnt keep it. Copies were good enough for the bank.
