which do you do?

Original post by LisaT

When you are giving a gift or card from the both of you, does one of you sign both names, or do you sign your name and he signs his?

I'm fine with writing both our names, but when Al's filling out a card, he always wants me to sign it myself.

It seems to be a thing in his family. Like its more special if signed individually. I don't get it.

I agree with Claud. Acutally, I have a pile of thank you's sitting on our kitchen table waiting for DH signature. I think it is nice when I receive a card where both senders signed it.

Sometimes Jay will sign his name. It depends, if it is HIS family, he signs his name.

I do not think it is impersonal at all. Sure it is nice if you see both sigs on there but everyone knows that the woman probably did all the writing and then shoved the card in front of the husband and said here, sign! I don't think the man would know what they signed anyway! I think it is better to get the card out IN GENERAL rather than to wait for both signatures if that was the case.

Roger has chicken scratch for his handwriting so he always tells me to sign it for both of us.

I/He will sign both if its an informal letter to someone who we aren't particularly close to, or that just one of us a relationship with. If its a close friend/family member we both sign for similar reasons to Claud.

I NEVER sign Scott's name and he never signs mine. Even on our wedding thank you cards we signed our own names. We are not one person just because we got married.
I agree with Claud, it is very impersonal to have one person sign both names.JMO

Re: which do you do?

If I waited for hubby to sign our TY's I would still be waiting, IMO I do not think anything is wrong with one person signing both or each person signing their name. Its the sentiment that goes along with the item. I would never scrutinize or make a big deal about something like that. I hit reply too quickly, I guess I am just don't take things like that so seriously. I would prefer a TY card or a gift signed for both by one, than none at all

For our wedding TY's Steve signed each one because I felt that was important. Of course, I wrote them all.

I sign his name, but only with my family. If it's a card for his side, I always have him sign it...of course, I buy the card and fill it out... hehe

To each their own!

It depends on the situation. For ty you cards I think we should both sign. But family ocassions we will sign both names or take turns filling it out.

HA! I had no idea I'd be starting such a debate. Love all the points of view on here. Thanks

I don't think signing both names means your one person because you got married. When I'd give joint gifts with friends or my sisters, one person signing for all was never an issue.

Re: which do you do?

I don't think any of us married mindless droids, so I think it's demeaning [to the men] to say that they wouldn't be aware of what they are signing. Personally, I don't just shove something in my husband's face and say 'sign it!' Often times, Jeff likes to add a personal little note from himself into a card, so he's signing more than just his signature. I guess this is all a matter of perspective, but when we send cards we like them to show our feelings and thoughtfulness.
Frankly, I'm surprised at how much everyone makes this sound small thing like such a chore, instead of something we all do to show love and support for family and friends.

Re: which do you do?

We aren't one person before we got married OR after we got married so me signing both of our names never deemed that either. I guess it is a personal perspective on what anyone feels is right. Like I said, I'd rather get the card out whether it is a TY or a birthday card (and I don't simply write, Love, Gary and Stacey...I write my feelings/sentiments/etc on all cards since I love to write) so never do I think the receipient feels like it is just my feelings on there since Gary didn't sign his name.

I SIGN for all cards, except the ones to his MOTHER, then he signs his own name.
