Who hates apartment living as much as me???

I hate my apartment. I live in a complex, we are on the lower level. Not the basement. The people upstairs are RANCID. We can hear EVERYTHING. Apparently these people fight all the time, as we can hear it. Our bedroom is over theirs, and we can actually hear them turn over in bed (as well as when they make up) I've called the super, landlord, etc., all they do is say they are sorry and they will move us. Why should I have to move? I don't want to make a complaint because that makes matters worse from what I hear. I said something to them, but they are so arrogant, it didnt matter to them. And...she is pregnant. So it should get interesting. I pay $1600 a month, and I have to blast my t.v. just to hear it. Whats worse is that I can't get my 19 month old to sleep in her own room and let her cry because they stamp on the floor b/c they can obviously hear her. I neeeeeed to get a house. I just dont have that kinda money to put down right now. We never thought the realestate marked would do this, so we didnt prepare before we had a baby. I'm hating life right now.....just needed to vent. Anyone else paying for hell? How can they charge all of this money? And all of the new places around that are sound proofed are 55+. There's gotta be some law against that already.

Re: Who hates apartment living as much as me???

cont... I mean what? Because we are under 55 we are not entitled to quiet enjoyment where we live? What are we considered animals or something? Every new place I have checked out is 55+, and I'm sick of it. My father is 51 (lives in the same house I grew up in) same with all of our parents. And my grandparents still live at home. I don't get it. They should have 21-45 or something.....(just kidding)

Re: Who hates apartment living as much as me???

I feel your pain

My upstairs neighbors seem to move their furniture around every night. That is when they are home in the evenings. When they get home late (after 11pm) it seems they like to stomp around the apt for about a half hour to let us know they are home.

Then our downstairs neighbors complains that we make too much noise by sleeping and letting our 9 pound cat scamper around the house. They also feel that it should not be necessary to take showers too early so they flush the toilet repeatedly (I'm talking 10-20 times) to take up the cold water and leave only scolding hot water for our shower.

Good luck.

Re: Who hates apartment living as much as me???

I can relate! I live in an apartment on the second floor of a private house. You'd think being on the second floor would be quiet, but it's not! I can hear my landlord and her family (3 kids, a dog, and 2 cats) like they were in the next room. I think it's still better than your situation though, have you thought about renting again someplace private? I think private homes work out better when it comes to noise... although in our place, not only do we have to deal with the people downstairs, but we live on a very busy street and there are trucks, loud cars, and motorcycles FLYING by at all hours! You can't even hear yourself think sometimes... I am soooooo ready for a house! Good luck... if you're that miserable I would just look for another rental for now. You never know what you might find! Hang in there!

Re: Who hates apartment living as much as me???

I feel your pain as well.

Our upstairs neighbor is up at the crack of dawn (5am) every morning and stomps around like she weighs 300lbs. I swear she puts her high heels on as soon as she gets up and the apartments have hardwood floors so there is no sound buffer. It is so frustrating, plus her closet doors must roll because she rolls something around up there about 15 or 20 times a morning....I am definitely ready for a house, unfortunately we too have to save more money!

soon2b- It's probably a desk chair. Our lovlies upstairs do the same thing. You would think they were kids playing for the amount of rolling around they do

Re: Who hates apartment living as much as me???

What did we get ourselves into??? Does anybody have consideration anymore? We're supposed to be enjoying married life and all we do is fight with the people upstairs. It sounds like a herd of elephants up there. I know that I walk hard sometimes and I specifically asked to stay on the bottom floor because I want to be considerate of others. Plus my daughter runs around too, so I didnt want people to hear that. But the people upstairs are monsters, I dread when their cars pull in. I get instant anxiety. And the funny thing is, they had the people next to them evicted for being too loud. Are they serious??? I want them to come down here and listen to their TV. Sometimes I want to run a chainsaw right in the middle of my apartment, and then leave with it running. Just to torture them back.

Re: Who hates apartment living as much as me???

I just hate apartment living (I live ina 2 family house, I am on the top floor) because I need more room

2 bedrooms is just not enough space.

People upstair in apartments rarely have respect for those under them.

Do they respond nicely if you tell them to be more quiet?

Re: Who hates apartment living as much as me???

Some of your stories!!

I used to live in an upstairs apartment (2-family house) and the downstairs owner used to smoke 24-hours a day. Yeah, I know it was his house, but I would wake up at night choking to death because the air was so smoke filled and hard to breathe.

I loved the $$ I paid (very cheap) and they were good to me and it was in a great area, but I eventually had to move because after 6 years I was wondering what all that 2nd hand smoke was doing to me!

Re: Who hates apartment living as much as me???

WOW - that's pretty bad. I have it good i guess. The only reason I'd want to move is for more space and a backyard. The insulation between apts in my building is awesome - I never hear anyone :) Most people are courteous to one another, but you always have a few losers I guess!

Re: Who hates apartment living as much as me???

When I approached them I tried to say that I know its apartment living, but could they just turn their tv down. I described it as being in the tv section of like PC Richards and all the tvs were on at the same time. She was sorry, and laughed about it. Later on I heard the 2 of them fighting over the fact that I said something. She told me to knock on the wall if I hear them. I did that, and he just made it louder. I've had it. And the husband is this little arrogant big mouth who is all nice when he sees us outside, but we hear how he really is. He sounds like Joe Pesce in the Goodfellas movie. I mean his wife is very overweight and pregnant to boot, and all he does is tell her what a fat piece of sh** she is. So I dont even want my husband to get into a fight with this guy because we know what a childish a**hole he is, so it wont get us anywhere. They are not home now, but I dread when they do come home. I just hope they leave soon. They also have a son who's there periodically, I think he's like 6 or something. So its gonna get croweded up there.

Re: Who hates apartment living as much as me???

I lived on the third floor of a four floor walk up in Hoboken. Al the apt were studio rental except the top floor- which consisted of two studio but were owned by someone. I lived in that apt for one year and it was from hell. The guy played the piano, yes the piano, from the time I got home from work till 11:00pm every night. And if I complained he played louder- he had all wooden floor so not even a carpet to soak up the sound. It was unbearable. The apt had a sliding glass door that leak when ever it rained. At one point I had a flood in the apt and wound up electrocuting myself because I was standing on a wet carpet while trying to unplug a lamp that was sitting in water. Then I slipped in the kitchen area because my feet were wet..this all at 2:00 in the morning. The carpet stunk for a week, after constant complaining they finally pulled it up and gave me a new one. The carpet guys couldnt believe what I went through.

The guy above me on night came and threaten me because I was banging on the ceiling - I was tired of the piano. When I moved out - the guy with the piano actually came to my apt to say goood bye. I closed the door in his face.

I feel your pain...not that my present apt is any better. It is my FI bachelor pad and I can not wait to move!! It is just gross and dirty and I clean every weekend.

Re: Who hates apartment living as much as me???

OMG I sooooo feel your pain!!!

While on our honeymoon they moved a family of 5 into the one bedroom apartment above us!!

They are animals. They are loud and disgusting!

We had to 'introduce' ourselves to them the day after we returned from our honeymoon because their 7 year old was jumping rope at 11:30 at night!!! They do not have carpets even though the lease says they have to! The landlord has told us if we don't like it move.

We doh! If we could afford it we would. We lived here for almost 3 years and up until the last couple of months we were happy. Now we hate it here. We are actually considering move in with my mother just to get out of this environment. At 1am their radio is blasting some techno booming crap! If anyone has wondered why I am grumpy this is why. I cannot take a nap. I get woken up at all hours of the night! So it looks like we are moving home into my old bedroom!

Re: Who hates apartment living as much as me???

Ok, the bast***d just got home. Ugh!!! SOOOO LOUDDD!!!! It sounded like she dropped her groceries all over the floor. I screamed 'Jesus Christ already'. I don't know how much more of this I can take. As I type its loud as hell up there with banging and walking. I guess its feeding time, I can hear her in the kitchen. I have friends that are overweight, and I used to be myself, and I know that if I was 'upstairs' I would make a point not to stamp around. I know they are paying the same rent as me and are entitled to live as well, but this is out of control. I think tonight I'm gonna let my daughter scream in her bed (we're trying to get her to sleep in her own room) but I dont want to torture her. And did anyone have any thoughts on my 55+ opinion. Like I said, are we animals that we don't deserve the same 'quite enjoyment' as people 55 and over? And I might add...there are a few couples in here in their 60s, and a waiting list for people our age (29 & 31). Is that fair? If they are so strict with the 55+ that we are not allowed there, then how come they come here? Its bad enough to find decent affordable living, now we have age discrimination. I'm not a horrible person, I've just had enough. I know for a fact that these 55+ places are extremely sound proofed.

Re: Who hates apartment living as much as me???

I'm pretty sick of apartment living myself. I live in a building and there are buildings all around, so I mainly hear things from the people in the apartments behind us. The instant parades that pop up really annoys me too... oh and the music... some times I wonder how they aren't completely deaf yet.

I am so ready to move into a nice quite little neighborhood... I never thought I would say that... but the Bronx is driving me completely MAD!!!

And the parking is annoying as well!

Re: Who hates apartment living as much as me???

I have to say that your situation seems abnormal- to say the least. We, too, are anxious to move into a house. Right now, we live in Babylon Village (upstairs 1 BR apartment) and it is so quiet. Quite often my husband travels for work and I feel safe alone. We have lived here for 9 months and will continue to do so until we find a house. For anyone considering looking for an apartment in the area, definitely check it out. I didn't think I would like it because I have lived in private houses my whole life- even in college. I should add that the rent is kinda high- but if you can make it work, definitely call for an appointment. Good luck!

**Complex is- Fairfield on Park Ave(less than one block from LIRR)

Re: Who hates apartment living as much as me???

We actually looked into that complex..but....we used to live at the Harbour Club in w.babylon, and we had a one bedroom. I loved it there. Then I got pregnant, and the woman that lived upstairs hates kids. Really hates kids. She told me that I should have an abortion, with all that is going on in the world how could I bring a child into it. I told the office, and they said they had problems with her before, but there was nothing they could do. Then when my daughter was born she did everything in her power to wake her, she pounded on the floors, so bad that the people that lived NEXT to her called the cops on her. Long story short, she got evicted, and last I heard, she moved to the Park Ave complex, so we didnt want to run into her. SHe had all sorts of problems and was an aocoholic.. And we needed a 2 bedroom, and this was the quickest one we could find. WE HAVE NO LUCK!!! I'm ready to move back to commack to live with my dad!

Hang in there...sounds like you have bad luck, but, something will turn up. Do you have a specific area where you would like to live? Dont stop searching for a new apartment. I am sure it's hard with a baby. Try to not get frustrated. So far, I haven't run into the nasty drunk lady from Harbour Club- if I do, I will 'drop kick' her for you! Good luck!

Its not worth all that youre putting up with, and youre paying a pretty penny too!

Re: Who hates apartment living as much as me???

I feel your pain. I've posted before about how loud my neighbors below me are. They use to keep us up all night because their son would start running around at 11:00 every night, just as we would start falling asleep. It hasn't been that bad lately, but they're still not the quietest of neighbors.

If you can't afford to buy a house right now I think you should start looking into a new apartment or maybe renting a house. It sounds like you really need to get out of there. Just get out there and see what options you have.
