who watched oprah the last 2 days (overweight teens)
was watching Oprah's show the past 2 days and it was so sad. They had overweight teens on the show and most of them were suicidal and so depressed, i felt horrible. They talked about how much they were teased in school, it was so sad to see
and i had wanted to post a thread about this but i dont think all parents are to blame but some have to take responsibility. One mother on the show yesterday PISSED me off so much. They had a guy on there that wrote a book called 'eat this not that' he compared 2 things and told audience to guess what was better and i was shocked by some of it. He said to get swiss not cheddar, and out of everything him and Dr. Oz said one mother of the teens raised her hand and said 'well not everybody can buy swiss cheese instead of cheddar, its more expensive' now heres the thing, they showed video of the teens eating breakfast, lunch and dinner, sort of a food diary. The same mother who asked that question had ice cream in the house, donuts, all this junk food. How about not buying that and buy the swiss, youll save in the end anyways. Plus they showed her son was addicted to video games and oprah made a great point, she said how about sacrificing and buying him less video games and using that money to buy healthy food. Its not like he was asking you to buy filet mignon or lobster. Of course ppl understand money issues but you cant say you cant afford swiss cheese when you have all this junk food in the house and have no problem buying him video games. I think his health is more important and sacrifices can be made.
It was also so interesting bc this guy was on who wrote the book 'eat this not that' on the screen they put up 2 choices and you had to guess which is better for you. Here are some that might shock you
Regular bacon VS. Turkey bacon. Regular bacon is actually better for you. They both have same exact calories and fat, but turkey bacon has more sodium
Multi-grain bagel with low fat cream cheese at DD VS. Glazed donut. The glazed donut is better bc has only 180 calories. Multi grain just means it has grains, not the same has whole grain which is good, and the bagel was over 500 calories
Eggs with bacon for breakfast VS. 2 french toast sticks. The eggs with bacon, eggs are good protein and good source to begin your day, and you will eat less during the day
A slice of pizza with ham and pineapple VS. Regular cheese slice. The slice with ham and pineapple. Ham is a very lean meat he said and pineapple is fruit which you should have. They are substituting alot of the cheese to put this on so you have less of the cheese on it, plus other nutrients you need
Arbys turkey and swiss on honey wheat VS their smothered roast beef sandwich. The roastbeef sandwich. The honey in the bread is alot and that bread alone has LOTS of calories.
But he did say to get swiss at home bc it is the best cheese to have and good for you. I think im gonna get this book, it was so interesting. Some things were shocking.
But point was that i was so upset with that mother. Her son had diabetes, was very overweight and they did tests on him to check his health and he really needs to change his life around and she is sitting there saying she cant afford swiss so has to get cheddar

I didnt see the show- but that book sounds amazing & I am definately going to get it.
Its amazing- the turkey bacon thing just made my day I HATE turkey bacon, but we always ate it because it was healthier- cant wait to go back to real bacon!

well thats good news, i actually liked the turkey bacon. But yeah i hear so many things that say NOT to get all these advertised low fat stuff or anything like that bc they are usually alot more processed and will end up having more sodium. There was one doctor i saw on a show a few weeks ago who even said balsamic vinegar isnt good for you and to skip it

I only saw the recap from the day before and yesterday's episode. It was really interesting what they said about the foods. I mean, eggs vs french toast sticks, sure, but u would think the turkey at arbys would be better than beef and cheese.
It was SOO sad watching them. Kids are so cruel and I know how that is b/c i was an overweight teen (and adult).
The kids need to be educated to some extent then need to take on responsibility as do the parents. It's hard as hell though, especially when you don't even know where to start like them..

yeah the first one was easy but i was also SO shocked about the roast beef vs the turkey and swiss at arby's.
It was very sad and i hope they are able to take all the help they are receiving now and change their lives around. I mean 3 of them had diabetes, had fatty liver syndrome and other things too. It was scary when Dr. Oz was talking about what your body goes through when you gain weight, even 10 pounds.

Yeah, they were WAY out of control. The one kid ate like 8 tacos and another had 3 bowls of cereal. I'm sure they also have severe issues w/ compulsive overeating and emotional eating. I hope they continue to counsel them.
The part he said about your brain craving more after you eat carbs is SO true. Carbs are evil!

yeah and that young boy they showed eating his cereal, does what i think alot of ppl make the mistake of doing. He just looked at the box and saw that it said 120 calories and thought even if he had a few bowls it was 400 about if that. But then dr oz took his cereal nutrition facts and said NO one bowl is not 120 calories, its per serving and the serving size was 3/4 cup. In front of him when he took out a measuring cup and showed him that it takes 3- 3/4 cups to fill a bowl that each bowl was actually close to 400 and that with that many bowls he already had about half of what he should eat that day. Plus the sugar level was past what he should even have in a day. I think alot of ppl read the nutrional facts and dont pay as much attention to the fact that the calories, fat and all that they show is only per serving not for the whole thing.
Yeah i had seen a show they did in the past that said the same thing and it is so true about carbs.

I didn't know, but wasn't really surprised when I read it. This doctor recommends using white or apple cider vinegar.
I didn't see this, but I agree, it's very sad. Aside from poor food choices and bad eating habits, I really believe it also has a lot to do with all the preservatives and steroids being used. Our bodies can not break them down. And, with so many working and/or single mother's, everyone is so rushed and sometimes chooses the quicker option which is usually not the healthiest.

well on another show Dr. Oz explained why margarine for example is not good for you even though ppl get that instead of butter. He said that for generations before us there was no margarine, and our bodies dont know how to break it down so can be stored as fat. SInce it is foreign to our bodies, its bad for us and doesnt know what to do it. Same with splenda vs sugar and all these substitutions. Our bodies cant break it down. That was eye opening bc i think weve all been told to get substitions or try fat free and all those stuff. Ever since i saw that show i dont do any of that anymore.

It s*cks bc there is so much conflicting information out there. This confuses so many ppl and while some think theyre doing well and trying, theyll end up finding out that what they've been doing has been bad for them.
Even the school lunches they showed were so horrible. In the movie 'supersize me' they did something similar and went to different schools to see what they serve the kids at lunch. MOST schools had the worst stuff, only a small percentage of schools did this whole healthy eating plan, and made them fresh food and very healthy stuff. People need to take more responsibility. Plus the teachers even complained that most kids after lunch would come to class all tired and out of it, thats bc of the type of lunches they just ate. WE all get like that after a big carb meal or something unhealthy.
And i dont think the parents should be blamed in a bad way or treated badly but they need to take responsibility now. They say they see their kids so overweight and dont know what to do. Well why is there so much junk food in the house, the parents are buying the food so i dont understand that. Just dont buy it and they wont have it in the house to eat. The parents cook the meals for their kids so why is there any surprise. They did video of what these kids ate and they were being served chilli hotdogs, 8 tacos, and things like that they were eating for dinner. I mean you dont have to be a health expert to know if you serve your kids just chilli hotdogs that its not good for them, or 8 tacos and just that. Theres no veggies ever served, where is the protein they need and other stuff. These kids JUST ate junk food. One girl was eating ice cream for breakfast and then had donuts

I agree. I also think it is very important for there to be some program in school. I really feel children should be educated from a young age. Like you said, it is very confusing for many adults. Kids also pick up habits from the environment they're in. I also agree about having junk food in the house. I think some parents don't want to deprive their kids of these things, but maybe they can try not to have so much of it in the house then. I personally don't like to keep a lot of junk food in the house because I know there are certain things I have trouble resisting. I think for some parents too, another problem is actually getting their children to eat..They get tired of fighting them, so they'll settle on something they know may not be great, just as long as they eat.
