who watched oprah the last 2 days (overweight teens)

Original post by Espo22

was watching Oprah's show the past 2 days and it was so sad. They had overweight teens on the show and most of them were suicidal and so depressed, i felt horrible. They talked about how much they were teased in school, it was so sad to see

and i had wanted to post a thread about this but i dont think all parents are to blame but some have to take responsibility. One mother on the show yesterday PISSED me off so much. They had a guy on there that wrote a book called 'eat this not that' he compared 2 things and told audience to guess what was better and i was shocked by some of it. He said to get swiss not cheddar, and out of everything him and Dr. Oz said one mother of the teens raised her hand and said 'well not everybody can buy swiss cheese instead of cheddar, its more expensive' now heres the thing, they showed video of the teens eating breakfast, lunch and dinner, sort of a food diary. The same mother who asked that question had ice cream in the house, donuts, all this junk food. How about not buying that and buy the swiss, youll save in the end anyways. Plus they showed her son was addicted to video games and oprah made a great point, she said how about sacrificing and buying him less video games and using that money to buy healthy food. Its not like he was asking you to buy filet mignon or lobster. Of course ppl understand money issues but you cant say you cant afford swiss cheese when you have all this junk food in the house and have no problem buying him video games. I think his health is more important and sacrifices can be made.

It was also so interesting bc this guy was on who wrote the book 'eat this not that' on the screen they put up 2 choices and you had to guess which is better for you. Here are some that might shock you

Regular bacon VS. Turkey bacon. Regular bacon is actually better for you. They both have same exact calories and fat, but turkey bacon has more sodium

Multi-grain bagel with low fat cream cheese at DD VS. Glazed donut. The glazed donut is better bc has only 180 calories. Multi grain just means it has grains, not the same has whole grain which is good, and the bagel was over 500 calories

Eggs with bacon for breakfast VS. 2 french toast sticks. The eggs with bacon, eggs are good protein and good source to begin your day, and you will eat less during the day

A slice of pizza with ham and pineapple VS. Regular cheese slice. The slice with ham and pineapple. Ham is a very lean meat he said and pineapple is fruit which you should have. They are substituting alot of the cheese to put this on so you have less of the cheese on it, plus other nutrients you need

Arbys turkey and swiss on honey wheat VS their smothered roast beef sandwich. The roastbeef sandwich. The honey in the bread is alot and that bread alone has LOTS of calories.

But he did say to get swiss at home bc it is the best cheese to have and good for you. I think im gonna get this book, it was so interesting. Some things were shocking.

But point was that i was so upset with that mother. Her son had diabetes, was very overweight and they did tests on him to check his health and he really needs to change his life around and she is sitting there saying she cant afford swiss so has to get cheddar

It s*cks bc there is so much conflicting information out there. This confuses so many ppl and while some think theyre doing well and trying, theyll end up finding out that what they've been doing has been bad for them.

Even the school lunches they showed were so horrible. In the movie 'supersize me' they did something similar and went to different schools to see what they serve the kids at lunch. MOST schools had the worst stuff, only a small percentage of schools did this whole healthy eating plan, and made them fresh food and very healthy stuff. People need to take more responsibility. Plus the teachers even complained that most kids after lunch would come to class all tired and out of it, thats bc of the type of lunches they just ate. WE all get like that after a big carb meal or something unhealthy.

And i dont think the parents should be blamed in a bad way or treated badly but they need to take responsibility now. They say they see their kids so overweight and dont know what to do. Well why is there so much junk food in the house, the parents are buying the food so i dont understand that. Just dont buy it and they wont have it in the house to eat. The parents cook the meals for their kids so why is there any surprise. They did video of what these kids ate and they were being served chilli hotdogs, 8 tacos, and things like that they were eating for dinner. I mean you dont have to be a health expert to know if you serve your kids just chilli hotdogs that its not good for them, or 8 tacos and just that. Theres no veggies ever served, where is the protein they need and other stuff. These kids JUST ate junk food. One girl was eating ice cream for breakfast and then had donuts

I agree. I also think it is very important for there to be some program in school. I really feel children should be educated from a young age. Like you said, it is very confusing for many adults. Kids also pick up habits from the environment they're in. I also agree about having junk food in the house. I think some parents don't want to deprive their kids of these things, but maybe they can try not to have so much of it in the house then. I personally don't like to keep a lot of junk food in the house because I know there are certain things I have trouble resisting. I think for some parents too, another problem is actually getting their children to eat..They get tired of fighting them, so they'll settle on something they know may not be great, just as long as they eat.

yeah if you keep junk food in the house youre going to eat it, plain and simple. DH has a habit of when we go food shopping to want to buy onions rings, and other junk food and i tell him its better we dont have it in the house, but he doesnt listen lol and then complains about gaining weight, you cant complain then. When i go food shopping i know not to buy anything to have in the house that is bad for you that you will snack on. I never buy chips, cookies, cakes, ice cream or anything like that.

bummed about the balsamic vinegar- that totally suxs! I just ordered the book though on B&N.com it was $13

You can still have it! If you're really being strict, it's something you should cut out. But, you seem a nice weight so I don't think you really need to worry...just watch how much you use.

yea unfortunately diabetes runs in my family- to a horrible degree- so I am really really cautious with sugars, carbs, etc.

Oh, I'm sorry...I didn't think.

no need to apology- I hope my other post didnt come off like i was pissy or anything- I am sad about the balsamic- I put it on everything lol!

My DH can go through a whole package of vanilla oreos in a couple of days. Ice cream is a bigger problem for me. Once in a blue moon, if I've been craving something for awhile, I'll get it once or twice and then it doesn't bother me for awhile. But, usually, in general, we don't keep a lot of junk food in the house. Oh, and soda is another thing that is bad with kids. We're not really big soda drinkers either. I'm more of a water drinker...once in awhile I like a cream soda. He likes his root beer, but he'll drink juice more. But, even juice you have to watch the sugar. Well, you know, it's like they say...everything in moderation.

Exactly why I cannot have potato chips and Doritoes in the house...I know they will end up on my butt and flabs lol
And I totally agree that parents have to take repsonsibility with their own kids...I teach and in the past few years I have seen a huge increase in the number of overweight kids at school...it's so sad because if you learn these habits as a child it is so hard to change them as an adult. Yes kids have to take repsonsibility too as they get older and schools still serve junk food (although they have gotten better...now there are options at my school like salad and they only serve WW bread) but the parents are the primary caretakers...I feel bad for these kids too because as kids, they are so vulnerable to what is taught them, whether it is good or bad.

I totally agree w/ the outta site outta mind approach. If its there, i will eat it so why torture myself.

DH made brownies the other night so i told him to either throw them out or hide them from me. Turns out he overcooked them so in the garbage they went.

I eat the artificial sweeteners, but try not to drink anything but water so it cuts down on my intake of them.

Margerine is trans fat so butter is better, but it has colesterol. Something like i cant believe its not butter is best, but the problem is i CAN believe its not butter lol I't not that bad though, just not the same as butter.

Same w/ pb. It has trans fat so natural unsweetened pb is best. Stuff like Jiff and skippy taste weird after eating the natural stuff.
