i want to... but i am not sure if i am registered as a Democrat or an independent....
if i'm a registered independent, i cna't vote in the primary.

I was registered as a Democrat, but I am not sure if I changed my status on paper to an independent... although i definitely did that in my head, that's for sure....

is there a way to find that out?

I usually do but I'm not crazy about any one so I don't think I'm going to.

DH and I sent in our mail-in ballots a few weeks ago. we always vote in both the primaries and the general. Not to sound nasty or anything, but it really peeves me when people dont vote -- theres no excuse. The primaries are just as important as the general election...GO VOTE

Glad to see you are all going out tomorrow! Our 'Chesapeake Primary' (MD, DC, VA) is next Tuesday so we'll be going out bright and early to do so. May even take the day off to volunteer. Depends on what happens tomorrow, or rather, today now.

Karen- you should just be able to show up at your polling place and ask. You can also call your Co Board of Elections to see what record they have for you.

Re: WHO's VOTING Tomorrow??

I'm with Liz - our primary isn't til next week. But I'm a registered independent so I can't vote in the primaries - but I will be watching with interest to see what happens. Both parties have elements that kind of disgust me right now so I don't feel comfortable being affiliated with either. I really like politicians who focus on issues instead of clinging to their party line - unfortunately they seem to be few and far between these days... It just seems to me like the country is getting more and more divided and it's getting harder and harder to find moderate politicians to identify with.

I dont think I can because I am a NJ res now and I dont get home till 7pm and don't drive so no way to get to the ballots.

If you're registered as Undeclared, you may still be able to vote depending on state. I was looking this up for NJ, and I thought if you wanted to vote in the primaries you could declare yourself the day of, but they will change your registered status.

But I know that NJ doesn't recognize 'Independent' as a political party, so that's why we're listed as undeclared ... I'm not sure what the rule is in NY.

ETA - Looks like Independents can't vote in the primaries in 6 states:

'5 million independent voters in six states (Arizona, Connecticut, Delaware, New York, Oklahoma and Utah) will be completely locked out of their states’ presidential primaries Feb. 5 because they have “closed” primaries, in which only a voter registered with the party can help choose its nominee.'

I am voting today - It is very important that everyone votes (you can vote in NY if you are registered Republican or Democrat) - you vote at your normal polling place!

I can't cause since I changed my name, I never updated my voter registration, and I had to call regarding something else, and they told me the cut off the change it was a few weeks ago, but I will vote in the future. I don't really even understand what voting today will do

Today's vote (for Dems) is to choose how many delegates will vote for Clinton or Obama at the National Convention in August. It is a proportional representation system. So if your congressional district has 3 delegates alloted to it, and the vote count is 51% to 49%, the person with 51% will get 2 delegates and the person with 49% will get 1. It's convoluted, but those are the party rules.

If you are voting in the Rep primary, it is a winner take all scenario. Example: if a majority of Rep voters today vote for McCain, McCain will win all of the delegates for NYS and the NYS delegation will vote for him at the Rep Convention.

In each party, a candidate has to reach a majority of delegates at their party's convention to win the nomination. It's kind of like the electoral college on the party level. It gets a bit more confusing when you count super delegates and such, but those are the basics. hth.
