Is this because people didn't live together before they were married back in the day?
Our lives seem completely the same now that we are married.....

Yea, I think that's where the saying comes from, not having lived together beforehand makes for a lot of adjustments.
But like you, we also lived together beforehand and after we got back from the HM life was pretty much the same as it had always been!!

i gotta say that its not 'hard' but it is different for us. we didn't move in together until 2 wks before the wedding.
i love it, we are in the that HM phase, but it IS very different and new for us. but in a good way! (aka--lots of shaggin!)

We did live together beforehand which helps iron out the kinks... I am glad we did- it has been a stressful year with Dhs job-traveling etc... but our marriage is strong as ever-if not stronger because of it .
Sadly, we know two people-one of my friends and one of his who were going through a divorce by their FIRST anniversary-

i think its more of an adjustment for couples who didn't live together prior to the wedding. maybe diving into important, but stressful, experiences such as buying your first house and making babies might make the first year difficult. i don't know though. much is the same for us as a couple and we moved outta state, got new jobs, and i started grad school.
