Im so mad. I bought DH these sneakers he's been dying for and he would have never guessed I got them because theyre hard to find. I bought them a while ago and theyve been sitting at my moms house. Well, last night he comes home and says 'This guy is selling the sneakers I wanted and Im offering him 150 for them!' GREAT FOR ME! SO I was like really who has them? Are you sure you want them? Are you really gonna get them. Asking him 101 questions so I can see if I should tell him. I HAD to tell him today or he would have bought them himself. There goes my nice surprise. Im so mad. What are the odds that 7 days before Xmas he finds the sneakers I bought him.
Now my mom is telling me shes going to buy tickets to the concert IM BUYING TICKETS FOR. So it looks like I may have to spill her secret too. I wish people would just realize 'Hey Christmas is right around the corner, maybe someone is getting me something I want'

Re: Why has surprising people become so hard?
OMG i hate that, this happens to me ALL the time with DH. He ends up buying himself something i want to get him or if i bought it already he will attempt to and i try to convince him not to get it and he ends up doing it.
And this week my bday surprise for him is RUINED. I wanted to take him to vegas, and he just told me he has to go to arizona for work feb 8-13. His bday is feb 5th so i wanted to go feb 5th-8th or 9th. But now with him leaving the 8th, he cant take off right before that bc he will need to finish up alot of things at work since he will be gone I AM SO ANNOYED and dont know what to do. He did ask if i want to go to arizona with him, but doesnt help with my plans at all
I agree with you, dont get yourself stuff right before x-mas
sorry Lea

Re: Why has surprising people become so hard?
Agreed. I bought tickets to see Wintuk for DH's Bday this saturday. The tickets came in and he recognized the envelope so he went on ticketmaster and narrowed it down to two shows and ultimately to Wintuk. I was so upset that he couldn't just let me surprise him..

See, they either buy what you bought them or find a clue and ruin it. And if they dont buy what you bought them something comes up right around the time you were planning something. Its almost impossible these days! He keeps consoling me like, 'Its okay, I dont even care you bought them, it was just so thoughtful blah blah blah' But Im mad!! Not at him at the stupid person who was selling the same sneakers. Now he tells me he doesnt even think the guy was legit anyway. So did I ruin it for nothing. I think Im just gonna start slapping everyone.

sometimes I dont think they realize that we actually pay alot of attention to things they like and what they want. I know your DH is into alot of the same stuff, stuff you cant buy at just any store and theres a few stores downtown which hardly ever have anything in there bc they sell ou t or you have to get them online from certain places. SO bc of that they are always online looking at these things or bringing it up. I do pay attention to what he is saying or if i see him looking at a particular site i pay attention to what he likes or what he points out. I think they forget that and maybe just maybe when we see its something they REALLY want we might want to get it for them. Just tell him the new rule is he cant buy anything before x-mas, to wait until after to see if he gets it or not then think about it.

Ugh, this happened to me too! I was going to buy tix to see The Killers (DH's favorite band) for Christmas and I was bidding on an eBay auction... well the next day we're out to dinner and he tells me a girl he knows from work used to work for MSG and is going to get tix for him. WHAT?!?! So I had to tell him. I was sooooo upset! The gift would have been a total shock coming from me b/c he knows I'm not a huge fan of The Killers and he would never think I would get tix. Grrrrrr!!!

Exactly Denise. I cant find the stuff he likes in stores. SO I have to check the history on the computer to see what hes been looking at. And he posts on forums and stuff and thats how I found the sneakers. Then someone else posted they had them. It really *****. I was worried it would happen but he told me the sneakers are so exclusive and sold out everywhere. I think Im gonna make that a new rule too.

Re: Why has surprising people become so hard?
oh wanna hear a way another surprise was ruined and this is the worst way, might make you feel better lol. I wanted to get tix for cirque de soleil in vegas for his bday. So about a month ago it happened to be on tv, i think it was on jon and kate plus 8 they went and saw it. So i casually just said, oh i really want to see that, have you ever seen it? i expected his answer to be no but he says yeah i have im like what i never heard you say youve been to it before, hes like yeah i went a long time ago when i was in college. So i was sitting there thinking and thought i doubt he went with friends. So i said 'who did you go with' he just looked like d*mn i shouldve known this was coming. And he said this girl he went to school with took him, so of course i was like WAIT a girl took you. Now of course i dont want to get him a gift for his bday that somebody else has already done for him in the past. He said it was nobody he dated and infact he never did anything with this girl. Now I know DH so i said, let me guess you just had no interest in her otherwise you would've fooled around with her. He did say she wasnt his type but they were good friends and i said obviously she liked him bc she wouldnt take you to cirque de soleil if she didnt, who does that. Then yesterday we went to my dads and my cousins were there too and cirque de soleil came up again. To make it worse i found out more yesterday, my cousin and i said that those tix are not cheap at all and that she obviously liked him and that was probably her move. When we said how much tix cost, he was like OH WOW then she really spent alot bc we had like 1st or 2nd row then he had to be funny and say wow maybe i should've just sealed the deal lol
i am so annoyed bc i really wanted to go see it but no way am i gonna do this now

yeah when he first told me i gave him the mad look, he kept asking why im mad. I said i dont care that years ago some girl took him, and then said that i was annoyed bc i wanted to get him the tix. He was like awww babe you can still get the tix, ive never gone with you i said forget it its ruined i dont want to. So yeah he knows lol. I know when i heard first row yesterday i was even more shocked and was like W** this just gets worse. I said this girl tried to wine and dine him he said she was rich and her dad had alot of money and connections so she probably didnt even pay for the tix herself but still doesnt make it better.

Lea-i am curious what sneakers they were and where did you end up finding them. Sometimes A-life can be good for these things, i know i found these real hard to find sneakers there but they are $1k so i said forget it lol.
Kim-yeah it really does S*CK, but i had come up with a plan b and was thinking of la femme but now none of that matters since it was also ruined bc he has to go away for work that week instead

Re: Why has surprising people become so hard?
Listen to this one - my mom knew that DH wanted to see Phish when they are playing their first show in like 4 years next march in Va. They sold out super fast ... well, the reasonably priced tix did. You can get them for like $2000 for 2. So she found a guy on craigslist who was selling them for $200 a piece and wanted to see if I want to go in on them with her as his xmas gift - from me and my parents.
What did she do???
She emailed the listing to DH, NOT ME!!!!
He never checks his email anyway so I thought it would be ok, but he had to check it recently for something and I know he saw the email.
We did not get the tickets however, I don't know if the guy was legit. I emailed him and got a autor reply, saying 'go to my ebay listings' - but the link he gave just went to a search for phish tickets, not even HIS listings - I had no idea what his ebay name was, etc. I emailed him to ask him more wquestions, such as 'can I meet you and pay for the tickets in person' and 'do you have the tickets yet or do they still have to be mailed to you from ticketmaster' and he never wrote back. I am not just forking over $400 on ebay, no way,
So now DH thinks he's getting the tickets probably but he isn't. My mom can be a good present giver but a bad surprise ruin-er.
So he is getting an iPod now.

Re: Why has surprising people become so hard?
Thats so annoying! I think I did that to him this year where I kept telling him what I wanted so he'd get it and then he got mad, he's like 'just let it be a surprise!' haha
That also happened with me and my mom, I saw something I wanted to get her and then she saw it at a different store and went on and on about how great it was

Re: Why has surprising people become so hard?
I'm sorry Lea. I know that totally *****. DH and I have been really good this year-almost every year this happens. I am trying so hard to make sure it's a surprise. I know he probably can guess what it is so I'm not even saying anything.
When my sister and I were little (and still now I guess) my parents would always say 'don't ask questions at Christmas time.' Its something I still say. It was funny once we started buying our own gifts for our parents and we started saying it to them they were like wait what.

Re: Why has surprising people become so hard?
I ripped my son up over this last week. He is going to be 13 on Sat. So his father and I are getting him birthday and Christmas gifts and so is the extended family. We are also throwing him a huge party. He went out and bought a new Wii game. I was so annoyed at him, even though it wasn't something I got him.
