Would you be mad?

Would you be mad?

DH and I are in a disagreement over the following situation. I think its rude and appalling, he is ok with it. Here we go:

Friends of his called Friday night and said they were going to stop over in a little bit. This was 6:15. They decide to show up at 8:45 w/ their two little kids in tow. As the son is walking up my stairs he hands me cookie dough and says 'can you make this for us'. I spent the next hour baking cookies for the kids while the wife sat there looking through catalogs.

First off, I feel like if you are going to stop over don't expect me to bake for your kids. Bring something already made, especially that late at night. I was FUMING.

DH said they are his friends and we go there and hang out so its ok. I disagree - I never show up with anything that needs to be cooked or demand they do anything for me. I like this couple a lot but lately a lot of things they do really tick me off and I need to distance myself from them b/c they are DH's really close friends and I'm trying to respect that friendship.

I can't say anything to them b/c they will take it the wrong way........what do I do to prevent this from happening? This isn't too bad - they have actually done worse but I've lost my patience.

Thanks for letting me vent.

Re: Would you be mad?

Ummm, hell yeah I would be mad!! When anyone shows up after 9:00, I get a little miffed (esp. being PG right now) because after 8:30, I want to unwind, etc. not entertain a houseful of guests.

Secondly, the MOTHER should have offered to bake the cookies for the kids, not have you do them. That was totally rude and inappropriate!!

Husband needs to get his head out of his butt and realize that you are being taken advantage of. Next time buddies show up with cookie rolls in tow, hit husband over the head with them and say 'Time to make the donuts dear!!'.

Wow!!!

Lori, I find that very rude. The kids had to get the dough from their mother right? The mother has nerve

Damn, say what ever you please. Thats just wrong. Next time you go to their house bring a frozen pizza and tell them to thaw it ouot.

What the heck is wrong with people?

Re: Would you be mad?

DH got reamed a new one when they left - there is not a spot on my body that says MAID

I'm telling you - some people never cease to amaze me. If I told you half the stuff they've done in the past few months your mouths would be on the floor.

DH is now getting lessons in etiquette from me b/c I am not going to stand for it. They asked us to spend New Year's with them and I said NO WAY. I want a night w/ DH by myself. I have plenty of years ahead of me w/ screaming children

Re: Would you be mad?

that is so nervy! You are too nice - I would have made up some excuse to the kid if I could think of one in enough time!

What was his mom doing when he asked you this?!

I would be mortified if that was my child.

(I wouldn't say anything to them about this - it's in the past, but I would definitely put my foot down if it happens again)

Re: Would you be mad?

Say sweetie, I am not making anymore cookies until I have children. If they bring anymore cookie dough here you can make it for them j/l Lori. I am thinking of a nice way to say it but I can't I guess they feel comfortable enough with you to do that.

Re: Would you be mad?

I felt bad for the kids - I hate to punish them for their parents idiotic behavior.

If something happens again I'm going to have to have DH say something. Let him deal with it - its his friends.

I would be mad!!! The mother should know better then that!

Re: Would you be mad?

I do think its rude but I sort of have an open door policy so that would not bother me too much. And since it his friends, I would let him decide what is appropriate.

That said - I would not be making cookies or anything else for them. If the kid handed me the cookie dough I would tell him to hand it to his mommy and she will make it for them at home!

Dont make yourself the martyr..its your home and you should only do what you feel comfortable doing.

I would think that was rude too. That was pretty unfair to you.

Re: Would you be mad?

The mom could have at least helped make the cookies. Does sound a bit rude. Not sure you could say anything, but your DH can and should.

That is VERY RUDE!!! I would be mad!!! I probably would've told the kids NO. I'm a b*tch like that. The kids shouldn't have been allowed to bring the dough to begin with! That takes some nerve and for the mother not even to help!! OH BOY! I'd be FUMING!

Re: Would you be mad?

Thats very rude... The mother should have said after the kid said can you make these for me.. do you want any help but she just sat there.... Like she was getting a hour off from doing ANYTHING for her children. I would , the next time you go over there for dinner, or whatever food it involved bring some frozen appitizers and say oh i did not have time.. would you bake them for me... anbd see what she does...

and if they went to the store to buy the cookie doiugh why could they not have just bought teh container of cookies from the store bakery??????

Re: Would you be mad?

I would have said to the mom:

Insert name, I already preheated the oven so you can get started on the cookies whenever you are ready.

Re: Would you be mad?

That's RUDE and I would've been PISSED! I had a situation once where my BIL and his wife and my hubby and I were at a friends house for a game night. There was a huge spread of food and my BIL came and asked ME to make him a plate!!! I was like 'what happened to your woman's hands!' She too sat there flipping through a magazine and look nonchalant. At that moment I wanted to BREAK every finger connected to her hand and snatch her by the hair into the kitchen. My BIL used to always come to me for crap like that and I had to NIP that! So I told him one day loud enough for her to hear - 'there is your woman, go GET her to make your plate if you can't make it yourself!' That RESOLVEd that and he hasn't asked me to make him a plate since!

Lori I think you have every right to be upset. We had some friend like that who took our kindness for weakness and we drop their asses like hot butter! Now THEY are the ones calling us all the time saying they miss us and want to see us! In a friendship I cannot stand selfish/self centered behavior, when I see that I go in the other direction. Give them some space, after awhile they'll appreciate how nice you are. And if you happened to run into that situation again, don't be afraid to tell the kids to ask their mother to bake them the cookies!!! You will not be rude, just standing your ground in YOUR house!

Re: Would you be mad?

This is the type of thing that never seems to bother men, or at least bothers women more. I would have been fuming. DH has a friend who habitually says he'll stop by at a certain time then comes at least two hours later. We don't see him very often but when we do we try to come to him or meet them somewhere. His friend is a nice guy, but he just has no respect when it comes to visiting a person's home.

Some people are incredible.

Re: Would you be mad?

you are right...this is rude...

I might let it slide if she said she didn't want to come empty-handed - would you mind if I made these in your oven..

but its just as easy to pick up pre-made cookies as it is cookie dough...so I don't know what she was thinking...

also I don't like kids who are not mine to be near hot ovens...I don't want that responsibility!!!

Re: Would you be mad?

OMG how freaking RUDE?!!

Bless you for making the cookies for the kids but that mother would have been burnt to death from the deathly stares I'd probably end up sending her way all night.

Poor kids.

I don't know, I'd probably say 'Look your mama looks lonely.. why not ask her to come help us so they are made faster and you can eat them faster'..

Not only do you not have the word MAID written on your body I doubt it says 'Personal assistant' or 'Automatic Babysitter'

Man.. I see why you'd need time away. I would.
