X-Post from LIF: REALLY need advice, neighbor-related....WWYD?
Ok so DH and I moved into an apartment in July. We like it a lot. The only thing is the walls are VERY thin. In the living room we can hear one neighbor's TV and them talking, and in the bedroom we can hear another neighbor. This is about bedroom neighbor. Short explanation - our building is in 3 wings with 3 separate elevators and halls that do not connect. Bedroom neighbor is the last apartment in the middle wing and we are the 1st apartment in the north wing, so we do not know them and do not run into them. From hearing them we have gathered that it is a couple with a (very loud) dog.
They are SO loud. We can hear every convo they have in whatever room our wall connects to word for word. Often we hear them very late at night and early in the morning. We hear their dog yap constantly. But the absolute WORST is some nights I get woken up by the man SNORING! I sleep with a fan, humidifier, noise machine AND earplugs (I'm a light sleeper) and I STILL get woken up to his SNORING! I don't think our wall connects to their bedroom because its not every night....but I don't know what to do. I've tried knocking on their door after work and nobody ever answers, and I am damn well not getting out of bed at 3am to go all the way downstairs, to the other elevator, and upstairs. (we live on the top floor) So when its really bad, like last night, I knock on the wall. Last night he knocked back and after that the snoring stops, but obviously they probably don't like us very much. I also wonder if they can hear every thing we do/say, so we are very conscious of that and try to stay quiet/watch the TV low in the bedroom. But since they don't try to keep it down it leads me to believe they DON'T hear us all that often...
I don't know what to do! If I do knock on their door, what do I say? 'Your snoring bothers me'? I'm really at a loss here!! Any advice or suggestions are appreciated! Thanks!

ugh - sorry! Thats a tough situation. Is there a landlord you can speak to that can be the mediator so you dont have to say anything? Maybe the landlord can soundproof the walls if enough tenants complain?

i'm not sure what they would be able to do about the snoring if you knocked ... it's not exactly something you can control. as Carey said, maybe the landlord could soundproof the walls or something?Or if you (or they) have a 2nd bedroom, could you switch and sleep there?
good luck!

uughh that suckss!! that happened to me in one of my old apartments. I probably would knock every time he wakes me up in the middle of the night. he gets the picture. then i'd probably move my azz out of there. sorry to say it. This is why I'm so afraid to buy a place.

This is just things that go along with apartment living. You live in Forest Hills right?I'm surprised bc most of the buildings are OLD and have thick walls so when I was living there I couldnt hear anyone on either side of me...
upstairs and below me oh man, what another story. the woman below us even went to the police on us because she thought we walked too loud in the apartment, yet she blasted some crazy techno music so loud we couldnt hear our tv on full blast (but she was within her rights bc quiet hours did not start until 10pm).
anyways. you just have to try to be as courteous as you can which you are doing by trying to keep quiet on your side..
AND to finally try to answer your questions --- maybe write a note and slip it under their door if they dont answer- i think step 1 is ALWAYS go straight to them first to make sure they KNOW they are disturbing you and if they are decent people they will TRY to tone it down.... follow up in person if it continues...
After that if they seem to be spiteful about it .. i would say go to the management company and they will contact them as well.
GOOD LUCK!

Tough situation because like someone else said, what can he really do to control his snoring. It's not like he's intentionally doing it.But I feel your pain. Our walls aren't plaster, they are concrete and we can hear our neighbors when they fight word for word. We haven't said anything because it's been in the middle of the day or early evening most of the time. But, 3 days after Christmas, at 1am we heard tons of people over there and a kid opening x-mas presents. Considering the time it was we figured it HAD to be a video they were watching but it was SUPER loud. That was a 1x occurance but if it does happen again I'll probably go over there and just let them know I can hear them. Perhaps they don't even know.
I too wonder if they can hear us b/c we do talk kind of loud at times.
