my dad insists on paying unless we are taking them out for their bdays or whatever.
though lately when we insist on paying he gives in more quickly. he's semi-retired and should not be paying for anything in my opinion. sometimes it's his idea so he wants to pay.

If it is a special occasion, like say my bday, my parents will pay or vice versa. We take turns too but I feel like my parents pay for us alot more and they shouldnt, neither should DH's parents. I always feel bad when they pay :(

It depends. We usually go to the restaurant assuming that we'll all pay for our own dishes. But MIL always insists on taking the entire check from us, and leaving us with only the tip. It's a very kind gesture, but I always feel bad.
As for my parents, we're not in New York so we haven't gone out to eat with them since before the wedding. But I think that we'd probably split the check. I wouldn't feel comfortable with them buying our meals, especially if it's a somewhat expensive restaurant and knowing that they don't necessarily have money to burn (neither do we).![]()
I honestly think if should be split.

I feel like a spoiled brat saying this- but I never even considered paying for my parents- I think it would insult them- my family is italian and its just how its done.
dh's family its different- his mom doesnt work, but if her boyfriend comes, he usually pays for us and we just leave the tip

when we go out w/ DH's parents, they always pay. if we try to pay they get mad.

We split w/ my parents, but his parents always insist on paying. We go out w/ my parents more though so I wouldnt expect them to pay.

Typically they pay, or at least try to…unless of course we are taking them out for something special. Even when we do that sometimes they try to pay haha….

if we go out with my Dad - We normally split the bill, occasionally we'll pay, occasionally my Dad will pay.
If we go out with my Mom - we usually pay and let her leave the tip...she's one person and we're usually eating out with her because she was helping us do something anyway.

my parents always pay- we dont go out with themtoo much cus they live far away.
DHs parents pay. but thats cus they know we are broke. When we have more money we will pay for what we get.

Dh will usually tell the waitress before we are even served to make sure the check comes to him. My parents always want to pay but DH and I feel like we should pay so we almost always do.

I don't like the idea of splitting the check.. they're family and I don't think its right..
My parents feel slighted when we even offer to pay because to them we're kids and its just totally not right.. my thinking is, once your kids are older, and they work, and you all go out, the kids should pick up the tab.. they should be happy about it.. it always falls on deaf ears with my folks.. eta: this is what i tell my parents...
