I think anytime someone plans a destination wedding, they should expect that some people can't attend due to financial reasons or a lack of vacation time.

I would tell them sooner rather than later. Maybe search a little more for airfare, see if flexibility with the dates will lower the cost.

But if you can't swing it, I think it's fine to decline. It's five months away, plenty of time for them to change their headcount and such.

y is it so expensive?! where are you going? im going to pr in february and the tickets are soo cheap
i think 5 months is still plenty of time to tell them no. our friends originally said they would come from FL to our wedding but had to cancel about 2 months in advance. as long as it was before i had to give in the final #, it wasnt a big deal. (the only difference is that your wedding is a destination wedding)

i think it's ok to back out ... $3k is A LOT to spend on a wedding!
