XP: NWR: Calling All Teachers! Thanks for the help!
Hello! Sorry to bust in like this on the Newlywed board but I need some help!
I'm a graduate student and I'm in a crisis. I'm really not liking my program and right now I'm wishing I would have listened to my gut and had done by BS in Education.
I have a question for all teachers: Can you teach say early elementary ed. (or any teaching in general) with a BA in something other than education and have a Masters not in Education?
Please help me out. I'm 22 and trying to figure out what to do with my life and not wanting to make the wrong decision and waste a lot of money!
Thank you so much in advance ladies. Any advice you could give me I would really appreciate!

You can work in a private school with degrees that are not in education. Might be worth investigating to see if you really want to teach long term.
If you are interested in public schools, you will eventually have to get a degree or advanced certificate to cover the education courses required by the state you want to be certified in.

I did the teaching fellows program. If you get accepted they pay for most of your masters and in exchange you teach in a high needs area for NYC schools.
It was a very challenging experience but I am so grateful for it!

Yea im not doing the fellows program but i am in a VERY high needs area school and its def an experience!!!! I do believe however you have to go for your certification
another option as mentioned would be private schools although realize the pay is ALOT less in some cases almost half!!!!
Id say try it out- see if thats what you want to do and then invest in getting a masters in education perhaps a certain area that interests you

Thank you so much ladies for all of your help and information!! Sorry I haven't responded back sooner but I got busy with work and class.
I think I'm going to stop the Master's program I'm in now at the end of this year and either 1). find a MA program in Education that had rolling admission or 2). work for a year while subbing to get in a classroom while working on my admissions stuff to start a program in Fall '09 (and hopefully do this in Georgia so I can live with FH and get familiar with the districts there!)
Thank you again ladies! I think I have finally found what I am passionate about and I am so excited to work on becoming a teacher!!
