DH and I have been having endless convos about this. We cant really decide if we should wait to have a kid after we buy an apt or vice versa. We have been weighing all the costs and benefits but we dont feel like we know enough about it. We dont want to wait too long to have kids but we havent even started looking for a place yet.
Does it really even matter which comes first? Those who have done it already or are planning to, do you have any wisdom?

I really think it is different for everyone.
For DH and I, we already own a co-op, but we would prefer to own a house before we have kids. However, we are not totally closed to the idea of having kids first - we know that we have the room for a (non-walking!) baby in our apartment, and if we got pregnant now, we'd be OK with the time crunch to find a house and get moved in before started walking.
In a perfect world, we'd have the house first ... but we realize it's not a perfect world, and sometimes you have to shift your desires/priorities to make it work.

I agree that everyone is different. For us, we absolutely wanted a house first. We wanted to do our renovations and make it a 'home'. Also, I didn't want to have to move again while pregnant or with a little toddler.

For us, the baby comes first. However, we are unsure if we are going to stay in the area we live in as we really would love to travel and live in multiple states. That's our own personal preference though.

For me, I wanted a house before marriage..lol. So we bought a house, got married and started TTC.
In my opinion, you never really know how long you will be TTC so if you really want a baby then I would start trying now and start looking for a house too.

We need a house first...right now we're in a 3br apt with SD and our cat and its cramped as it is...plus we live on the second floor with a big staircase so we couldn't really have anything older than a newborn without having serious safety issues.
Hopefully we'll be able to buy in the next year or two.

we own a two bedroom coop so for us we could have a kid now - if i rented i would not have a kid until i owned something but that is just me
if we do ever have 2 kids - house will come before that - or at least a 3 bedroom coop

We found out we were PG in early May.
We closed on our new house last week.
It was our plan to buy once we knew when we were having a baby. Now I've got about 5 months to get everything in order and prep before the LO comes.
We could've definitely had a non-walking baby in our apt, but the idea of house hunting and moving with a baby in tow was way too overwhelming, so we chose to buy as soon as we knew.

We own our townhouse now, so I guess the house came first. However I really feel cramped here, as it was always supposed to be our 'starter' house. I have always said I wouldn't be comfortable being pregnant or having a kid here, since I feel cramped already, but as time goes on I think we may end up having our first in this house and moving out as he/she is getting into toddlerdom.
