YAY! we're going to HAWAII!!

We just booked a trip to Hawaii in October. We figured we needed to go back one more time before we move east (it will just be too far away then). I also wanted to make it to Alaska before we move, but thats looking doubtful.

A friend of ours recently moved to Oahu, so we'll be spending half the time with him (in his extra bedroom) and half the time on Kauai (we stayed in Maui and visited the Big Island last time).

YAY!!

edited to ask: do we need a car on kauai? I was thinking of maybe renting a jeep for a day to tour around...

We stayed at the Hyatt. I think you need a car. You can drive to the other side of the island, go see some waterfalls...

It depends if you want to stay at your resort or not but I think renting a jeep is the way to go..

We drove around everywhere!

You definitelty need a car in Kauai. I'm so jealous, Kauai was my favorite island!!! You'll have an amazing time!!

I agree with what Dawnie said.

I stayed at the Hyatt too and wanted to drive the whole island and see everything. It is not huge and can be done in hours but you definitely need a car. If you just plan on hanging at the resort, then you won't but to leave and really do anything there, you will need a car. I hear a jeep is great to rent but I also hear it tends to rain unexpectantly (depends where you are on the island) so that can be an issue. We went with a convertible because the top can go up quickly.

That's awesome! I just saw the Hyatt Kauai pool featured on Travel's top 10 best pools - I wanted to go back so bad!

Totally makes sense for you guys to go now while you're half-way there

And yes, I'd recommend a jeep for Kauai. We were given a camaro which is almost useless since not all the roads there are paved. We didn't venture out of the resort too often but if you plan to, get a jeep.

When in October Lisa? Rob and I are going to Oahu and Kauai in October as well. Our flight leaves for Oahu on the 25th.

Cira - we'll just miss each other! I've got flights on hold for Oct 10-20th. We'll start off in Oahu, then head to Kauai for 3-4 nights and then back to Oahu.

Where are you staying on Kauai? I'm tempted by the Hyatt but since this isn't a honeymoon or any special event trip, I'm hesitant to spend that much...but I also don't want to regret not staying there. I'm researching options now...

Did anyone see other great options that weren't the Hyatt?

have you thought about a tour bus of some sort to see Kauai? We did that on Maui...and they were able to show us things that we would never have been able to find on our own...

That is GREAT, Lisa! I am officially jealous We had hoped to see Hawaii before we moved, but obviously that wasn't happening w/a newborn!

Lisa ... I responded to the other post ... we are staying at the Hyatt. We reserved a garden room, but our travel agent was able to get us a free upgrade ... so I'm hoping it's at least partial. I figured that we wouldn't be to Hawaii again soon, so why not splurge a little - I think the difference was an addl $500 for the Hyatt vs. the Marriott. I heard that the Shearton was mostly family - so we ruled out Shearton from the beginning.
Also ... tell the hotel it's your honeymoon - what do they know and if they have availability - they may upgrade you!

I've only been to Oahu but if you like, I have a few recommendations. One is Roy's for dinner...it's amazing! The other is Mr. Matsumoto's shave ice...it's a cute shop on the north side of the island that this family has owned for years. They make the traditional shave ice...complete with vanilla ice cream and azuki (sp?) beans underneath. Yummy!
